I've noticed quite a few ~dfxxxx.tmp files (where the x are letters and numbers) in my C\Windows\Temp file. Does anyone know what is creating them? I've deleted old ones. I ran a virus scan a little while ago and it couldn't open two of the ~dfxxxx.tmp files. Properties gives no information except date created, modified and size.

I would have thought installing or decompressing software would cause these temp files if this is the temporary repository as set on your system.These type of files would normally be deleted on completion of install but sometimes it leaves a few behind.
Those temp files could well have been created (harmlessly) by anything. But the names you mentioned caught my eye. You wouldn't happen to have a D-Link router would you? That is the naming convention (and the files go to the temp dir) some of these routers use for their activity logs.
Nanceel0--If the router idea is not the answer, can you learn anything about the ~dfxxxx.tmp files by right clicking|Properties?

Thank you for your replies. I have been installing new software lately . I have the Westell 2200 modem NAT and I use a switch. I don't know about this D-Link. The Westell uses pppOE for my connection and I think it has a router (it can do dhcp).
I have deleted most of these ~dfxxxx.tmp files. Last night two of them said "access is denied". I just opened the properties of them and it shows these tabs: General, Summary, Statistics (shows modified date), Content, Custom (shows text). I was able to delete both of them now.
Now I have two more that say "access is denied" when I try to delete them, and when I click on Properties only the general tab appears. I'm not sure, but it seems to me that when those extra tabs appeared I was able to delete the files.
I just got two BOClean updates, could those files that can't be deleted have anything to do with that?

I wouldn't worry about them.
The reason you can't delete them is because they are currently being used by one of your active programs. Then, after a reboot, the files are left behind, and 2 more are created.
On a periodic basis, as you do other disk maintenance, just clean them out.
If you really, really, really want to know the program, download TaskInfo.
It has an option to show all open files.(don't be alarmed, there can literally be a "ton")

I was amazed when I read your reply! When I turned on the computer I had four of these files and I was able to delete two of them. I appreciate your explaining what is going on :) I think I'll pass on downloading that program, it may be overwhelming :)

Sometimes when windows will not allow you to delete a file, try this...take a floppy disk or jump drive and "move" the file to it. Whaa-Lahh....now delete it. (Works for me)

If it is TEMP and you have not intentionally installed to that folder, then all files are fair game.
