I have a P4 2.4gb and a Asus motherboard that allows me to overclock my processor from my bios. Is it possible to overclock my processor at all? I have a couple extra fans running and I have a program that came with my motherboard to watch the fans and the temp of the processor. If it is possible what do you recommend I set it at to try?
Yes, I overclocked my 2.66B to 2.94 with no problems at all, I think I could have gone quite a bit further, but I'm happy with what I got :) Most P4's will overclock very well as many of them are actually faster CPU's than marked (Intel produce more of the highest rated speeds than they can sell, so they mark them as lower speed ones).
The secret is to do things in small steps, just increase the FSB by no more than a couple of MHz at a time, and make sure that everything is stable before you go any further. And, of course, keep an eye on those temps - though in my case it's only increased the temp by 1C when running flat out, using the stock Intel cooler.

Which version 2.4 do you have...2.4a, b or c?
The reason I ask is they all overclock a little different. Up until a couple weeks ago I had a 2.4a, and I could only get it to oc to about 2.6 or 2.7, and remain stable. I think it was temp related. It would get pretty hot right away.
Then I got a 2.4c (thanks Santa) and it overclocked immediately to 3.0 with no problems and my temps are much, much lower. I'll bet I could take it higher but I'm satisfied with it where it is. I let it run for over 24 hours on Prime95 on the Torture Test with no problems. I've read of it going as High as 3.4, but I think that was with a water cooler.
Point is the 2.4c runs much cooler than the other versions for some reason and is better suited to overclocking, so keep that in mind while your experimenting.

When it comes to overclocking no two cpus are the same, even when they are the same type/revision/stepping.Since there is no "gb" type I'll assume this is just a typo and you either meant simply that you have a 2.4ghz processor, or a 2.4g or 2.4b. It will make a difference in terms of what your possibilities are. And of course, the motherboard factors in to the equation as well.Quote:

Yes the GB was a typo. To be honest I am not sure which processor I have. Is there a way to check it?
What would you guys say is the nornal operating temp of the P4 and what would you say is too hot?
So far I am up to 2.61ghz and still stable. I am going to run it like this for a bit and see if I can go higher.
Keep an eye on those temps and i would run a stress test for at least a few hours to see if it can take it. PM me if you want some help.
