DVD Rom Install - Locks up

My CD-Rom finally crapped out on me, so I wanted to replace with a cheap generic DVD-Rom. I purchased an Artec 16X and thought it should be a snap, but I cannot get it to boot.

If I install it, it wont get past the black XP boot screen. Earlier it would freeze after boot when it said "new hardware found CD-ROM". I can't get it even to hit windows now.

It will work in safe mode, but not with networking.

If I boot with the power/cable off then reconnect after boot, it works fine. Drive information in Deveice Manager show generic though. Cannot find an Artec driver, though I thought a DVD drive in XP wouldn't need a driver.

Thoughts? maybe it has something to do with the old Creative CD-Rom?

Did you set the jumpers correctly? If so, I would remove the drive that's listed in Device Manager, done in safe mode so you can see if there are multiple entries causing the problem. Remove all instances and reboot. And no, you don't need specific drivers, xp has/uses generic ones.

Tried both as secondary master over ZIP and primary slave to HDD. Won't boot either way. Only one instance in Device manager and it is listed as CD-ROM. No error messages, etc.

Disconnect the Zip drive and bootup.
Windows has the driver for the device. And with the zip disconnected, it should pick it up and work correctly.
Check it out.

And if you are still stuck try the following:

1) Phsyically disconnect the new dvd drive.
2) Boot in to windows
3) Open a command prompt window (Start --> Run --> CMD)
4) type in the following 3 commands:
set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
cd windows\System32
start devmgmt.msc

5) When Device Manager opens click on the View menu item, then enable Show Hidden Devices
6) Under the cd/dvd drives category delete all entries
7) Shutdown the system

Now reconnect your new drive and try rebooting normally. See what happens.

Yet,when I tried the hardware install wizard again, it had me remove some audio and video codecs. After reboot (I also slaved to my CDRW which is on my Promise card) it detected and intalled the DVD rom as well as audio codec.

Maybe the codecs were associated with the old drive and they needed to be removed? Anyway, it seems to work after another reboot.

Codecs would not be associated/related to you dvdrom drive, these would relate to something like a sound card.

It's unclear what exactly fixed the problem, but at least you seem to be set now.
