Get a fancy clipboard program. Or
Get something a lot more powerful than NotePad like Word. Cnn use macros to do all sorts of stuff...
Have a look at TypeItIn V2.6. I used it for a while as trailware. I see it is now Freeware/Shareware. You mentioned Notepad. So I presume this is in Windows.

Thanks, I thought there was also a way using DOSKEY or ANSI.SYS also, but I don't know for sure. ..and I don't know if that works with notepad etc...
I'll have a look at the suggested program.
Are programmable keyboards worth the money?
Not free ($24.95), but you can try it free for 30 days, is KEYBOARD EXPRESS, which works like a charm for me. Its specs state Win9X (and later), so I don't know if it'll work for you in Win3.x.
