If you had two computers running Windows 95 or better and no network cards installed, can you make use of Microsoft File and Printer Sharing Service with share-level security implemented when connected over a dial up modem? For example, assign a resource a password and access the resource over a modem.

Setting up a Direct Cable Connection may be your answer but I'm not sure if this answers your question. You can use a parallel or serial connection to connect 2 computers but not any more. I think you'll be better off installing a network card and connect the machine via router or a hub.

If the two are not in the same household....you could connect via pcanywhere and share files and printers.
You can get a Windows network operating over a dialup connection. It's been a long time since I've done it, but there's a Dial-Up Server component you can add through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup.

What if the two computers were miles apart or you didn't have a cable?
Can Microsoft File and Printer Sharing Service be installed and utilized in this instance?

Also, I think Microsoft's Hyperterminal could be used.
For example: Copy files from the DVD to the desktop computer. Position the laptop at a friends house. Dial away and transfer all the files. Once on the laptop, he could run the install or setup program.
