Finally tried a Mac

Was given PowerPC 5200cd, running incomplete OS. Borrowed a 8.6 CD from a friend and wiped the HD, initialized and installed new OS. As a total Mac newbie, had a great time learning a few things about this system. I also found a few good Mac sites, where I could dl updates, different OS's etc. The 5200 doesn't have ethernet card or modem, so can't go online with it, and don't want to spend $$ on this older puter. If I dl some of the Mac files etc., to my W2kp puter, can I burn them to a CD and then use them on the Mac? Or will the different file names/extensions going to cause a problem? Same goes for other old Mac software on Cd's - can I burn a copy of them on the W2Kp puter, and be able to use them on the Mac? Same question applies to Mac files dl'd to W2kp puter - copying to floppy - will this work?

Thanks for any replies, just trying to learn, and didn't see anything in the forum exactly pertaining to these questions.

I'm surprised that McDonalds didn't try and fight for naming rights to the MAC.

Maybe they just took out the trademark on Big Mac.

Then again maybe they did and it was so long ago it wasn't publicised so much as court cases these days.

PowerPC evolved just after Gates put his two cents into the equation. That is, he bought the rights from MAC to use on Windows. :D

The questions posed were on the APPLE Mac, not the Big Mac...tried the latter - just about food :p , and hoping the Apple wasn't just about a puter..

I'm not totally sure but as long as you don't execute them before had, that is they are still zipped or compress, then I see no reason you couldn't burn them to cd. As for using floppies, I'm told that MAC can indeed read PC floppies.....how I'm not sure because the PowerPC6110CD I had, wouldn't.

PC file formats are readable in MACs anyway so you should be fine burning them to CD or writing to floppy as its the Windows system that will not recognise the file type.

I prefer my MACs with cheese anyway :D

lol Nix he he i have tried to do exactly what is being done here when i got a se/30 and was a complete mac noob

I would download files and put on floppys and not work properly a mac can read pc floppys but pcs can read mac formatted floppys

Your suggestions and thoughts - (and laughs ) - got me thinking more. Checked out a couple of MacAppleicious sites and found more info on what I was looking for. Have dl'd and copied the files to floppy as required and also burnt a cd with Mac OS 8.6 from another site. Puter is now running as good as can be expected - not a PC, you know - ;) and has been given to a young handicapped fellow who is very artistic and uses graphic design stuff.

I had written this earlier, checked it and forgot to final post it...duuuhh!

Macs always were good for graphic design work. Some professional grahic designers still insist on using them.

thelordglen, se30's were a bit old...or are still. The newer Macs have come a long way since the Se30 days. :D

Nix, don't know about those Apple Mac's but the APPLE pies at Mickey d's are pretty good. ;)

Ok, had a Mac LCIII a long time ago. Have just bought a Mac Mini -- love it. I also have a Sony VAIO Pc - big piece of crap, not the XP operatingsystmem but the computer itself. Think I'll stick with the Mac for now. It works great and no problem with viruses or trojans or spyware or any of that stuff. At this point I don't even have the firewall turned on. (but am on a router).

Yeah agreed photo lady the se/30 i have is running system 7.5 won't run 7.6 i think it was designed for PPC which the se /30 don't have. Macs i believe will read pc formatted disks but won't open some files from the disk. I no with os x there is a lot more support for windows documents.

You can allow a windows user to browse though the mac by turning on the "windows file sharing" were before you have to have 3rd party stuff like DAVE or Pc Mac Lan
