Byan--So pleased you asked this since I could easily tell you for Win98
http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/iconlist.html
and always wondered where the icons were in XP.
So I played around and found that most, if not all, the named files including the icons are in WinXP, also. But they have moved to the C:\I386 folder. So for example C:\I386\Shell32.dll and C:\I386\progman.exe have many of the most common. The easiest way to access the icons, themselves is through the Change Icon button and type in the address.
You may also want to play with this page which is the parent of the above URL

where is this I386 directory?..., it certainly isn't in the root of my system drive...
I thought I already knew where the icons were located..., which is in the windows directory and system32 directory..., but I do not know where some of the icons are located and which files effect what...
I am yet to find out where I can find the directional buttons for windows explorer...
thanx again,
Byan
EDIT: I just found them.., they are in the Bitmap section of shell32's resources...., I can't believe I forgot to look there...
Byan--Glad you found them. On my PC running XP Home, those icon files are in C:\I386. Also in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. But no Bitmap file/folder (except one that does not apply).
Perhaps you are running XP Pro?
I am using XP PRO..., but that really shouldn't matter in this instance...
I really dont know about the C:\I386 folders..., I have never really heard of that..., I dont have SP2 either but I really dont think that would effect anything either...
about the bitmap file/folder thing..., I was talking about in reshack..., there is different resources..., and under the bitmap type (in shell32) you find the brower stuff...
I forgot this was there for whatever reason and was looking under the icon type of resource and not finding what I wanted...., really dont know what I was thinking...
The "I386" folder is where the NT-based Windows installation files are kept on the CD. To speed installation, some installers copy the entire folder to the hard drive before installation, but it is not a requirement. A standard off-the-CD install will not result in a system with an I386 folder.
Some of the OEM "pre-loaded" installs -- the ones that don't come with Windows CD's -- probably have I386 on the drive.
