Right Click Open With
When I right click a file one of the choices presented in the context menu is "open with". In "open with" I have two instances of Microsoft Photo Editor. How do I remove one of these? I am comfortable editing the registry if necessary, but prefer an easier way if possible?

I've never used this little program but I've seen it recommended many times...

Thanks fink. I'd rather not have to install a new program to use one time for this single purpose. I know there has to be a way to edit the open with menu.

Control panel>add or remove programs>select program access defaults
I don't know but see if that helps. :p

Hi, back up registry first.
This setting allows you to decide which programs are listed in "Open With" dialog box which is shown when an unknown file type is opened. Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications]
To stop a specific application appearing in the "Open With" list select the associated sub-key and create a new empty string value called "NoOpenWith". To allow an application to be shown in the list delete the "NoOpenWith" value. Restart Windows for the change to take effect. Thanks to Kelly's XP.

Open Regedit
Navigate to the following key:
HKEYCURRENTUSER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
Locate the file extension for the type of file whose list you want to edit. Click the + sign and click "OpenWithList."
In the right pane, you'll see a list of entries labeled a, b, c, etc. in the "Data" column, the name of the program to which the entry corresponds appears.
To delete a program from the list, click it (the letter under "Name," not the program name under "Data") and press the delete key.

Hi, as I said from kelly's XP, Elaine your method appears to work , however I don't think this is the way to modify these things, many security features rely on the extra open with options ie scripts set to run should open with notepad etc..etc.. Still it worked just be cautious Kelly doesn't do things without a reason.

I think that the things listed under OpenWithList are basically a history of things that you have opened a specific file type with.
I regularly go through mine and either delete the key completely or just cul it back to one option.
Eg .JPG files usually end up with a whole heap of applications listed eg MSPaint, Internet Explorer, Image viewer, Firefox, etc etc
