router question

This may or may not be the correct place to post this question but here goes. I built my system in last december and after I got all up and running I did a ghost image to 5 cd's in case of major screwups that I could not fix. Since that time I replaced my router with a network everywhere wireless B model #nwr11b.Now my question is that I thought when I redid the HD with the ghost image it wiped out everything that was on the drive and replaced it with what was on the drive when I first did the ghost.But I can type 192.168.1.1 and it shows my new router.I never loaded any software for the new one. The other router I had was a linksys wired. Is the software the same?I am totally confused.Everything works great since the restore but wondering why the new software for the router is installed after I did the Ghost.

Most Linksys routers if not all uses the 192.168.1.1 ip address to access the router's web utility.

I am still confused.What actually am I looking at when I type 192.168.1.1.Is this a server on the web or something on my HD.What I am asking is how could my new router show up after I redid my HD with a ghost image from last year.I attached a picture of what I view when I type 192.168.1.1,now this is not the router that was installed when I did the ghost image,this is my new wireless router,I have not installed any software since I did the Ghost.tdark

The "site" you see loading up is built into the router, not on your hard drive. This way, you can configure the router from any PC on the network without the need to install additional software.

But I wiped out my HD and did a ghost,now how did this software show up.You see I had a linksys BEFSR41 installed when I made the Ghost image.Since that time I replaced it with a wireless NetWork EveryWhere.I never reloaded that software after the ghost image replace but it still shows there when I type 192.168.1.1.Man I am confused and just when I thought I was understanding computers??(ha)I thought that when I restore my computer with a past Ghost image it wipes out everything and replaces with a copy of everything I that was on my computer last year when the image was made,and the router was just installed last month(the wireless).Before I did the image backup last year I could type 192.168.1.1 and it would bring up Linksys software ,OK I restore with that image and type 192.168.1.1 and it brings up network everywhere software and I never reinstalled the networkeverywhere software?????????????

puterfixer is right. You're not connecting to the hard drive. You also are not connecting to the web server. The software of the router is installed on the device itself so you are connect directly to the router itself. However, you can only access the setup screen if you have a Internet connection. If you have a automatic private ip address in the 169.254.x.x range, you won't be able to connect to the router.

So I can remove this computer and replace it with another and just connect the cables and type 192.168.1.1 and would be able to see the network everywhere router without loading any more software.Would this be why when I did the service pack 2 download and after it was installed it would crash.Every time I would right click on local area connection the computer would freeze.That is why I redid the system with a past ghost image to start with.Would I need to disconnect my router before I do the service pack 2??I know this is getting off the subject but thoght I would ask anyway

Being connected to the router shouldn't affect installation of Service Pack 2. I think this bit is more likely old/buggy network card drivers, or an existing spyware or virus infection when you installed SP2.

Could be the network driver(but I do not think so,it is a fairly new linksys nc100) also no viruses or spyware.I will try and update my network card drivers and see what happens.Thanks,tdark
