Hi,
I am looking for a firmware update for a Mat****a CR-588-c Cd Rom. This Cd-Rom cannot playback mpegs on it's current revision of LP-12.
Edited to show name of drive as VDR blocked out some of the letters Matsh ita Note no space between h and i.
Also Matsh ita was bought out by panasonic.

The cd rom is a 32X speed. Yes I read the Model number right off the sticker on the Cd-Rom. Cr-588 works for the most part as the family number but CR-588-C is actually what is printed on the lable.
I was able to copy and paste a Mpeg 2 file from the cd to the desktop. The Cd-Rom was able to do that but cannot read the file. So I am pretty sure a Firmware update would fix that. I tried all the sites you guys posted for me and no luck.
The video card is really old (Matrox G100 A, "The A means AGP") It is just a 4 meg Video card but plays back Mpeg 2 beautifully.
This is a HP Vectra VE 6xxx 8 series. I was able to find and flash the bios to HT.01.08 From HT.01.02
Here is what the flash program said what was new:
It is recommended that you flash this BIOS on your
HP Vectra VE 6/xxx Series 8. This is a preventive action
in order to prevent a graphics card failure
News & Enhancement since HT.01.07:
- Improve Matrox G100 video BIOS management.
(Fixes the blank screen issue that may impact some
Matrox G100 graphics cards).
In the event of a graphics card failure:
This BIOS will permanently fix the problem (BIOS can be
flashed using the "BIOS recovery mode", described below).
If not, the graphics card may need to be replaced, please
contact your support provider.
The flash went just fine without a hitch!
I updated to the latest Video Driver from Matrox. It won't play Divx or Xvid. The driver evidently doestn't support Mpeg 4 I Guess, even though I have the latest codecs installed to playback the Divx files.
I also updated to Direct X 9.0B No difference on video playback.
I'm also unable to locate a firmware update for the the Matrox G100-A card.
This is pretty old stuff I know, but I kinda like working on old stuff sometimes and seeing how much you can get out of it.
Specs on this are: 64 megs sdram, Intel pent II 333, Aztec 2320 Isa Sound Card, HP Netserver 10/100 Nic, Adaptec Scsi Controller, Zip Scsi Drive Internal, 4 Gig Hard Drive.
This computer is working great. It really isn't worht a video card and CD-Rom upgrade though. So I am just trying to Max out what it can do wth what it has.
BTW HP yanked to bios flash off there driver page but didn't remove it from their FTP server. Took me a hour and a half to find it too as it is not labled as the system is. The File Name is whb1z1en . It had a text file inside the download file saying what the file was for. More lack of support.
Any help somebody can give me locating a driver for the Matrox G100 that will allow Mpeg 4 playback and/or a Firmware update will be greatly appreciated! I think the latest version of the Firmware flash update for the Cd-Rom CR-588-C is LS15.

I think your getting confused here.............the type of file playable is nothing to do with the firmware but down to the codecs for the players on your system.

Firmware to flash the Cd-Rom has everything to do with the ability to read and playback just about any file type.
There is only a couple reasons really to update the firmware on a cd-rom. They are so it updates the tables on files it can read or resolves compatability issues.
All the codecs in the world would not help you if the Cd-Rom cannot read the file because it cannot recognise the file! This is old school stuff I know as most current hardware has updated tables built in for most file types!
Yes I have verified that LS15 is the latest Firmware for the CR-588 Cd-Rom my current version is LP12 and I am still looking for the LS15 Firmware. Don't get this confused with the LS15 firmware for the LTR12101b cd writer. They have the same firmware file name but are not the same for the cd-rom I have.
Cdrom (or any cd type device) firmware does not give it the ability to read a particular file type such as MPEG, JPG, data, exe, or whatever. Any individual file is is nothing more that a series of bytes to the drive. The drive (and firmware) doesn't know nor care whether a give file is an MPEG or anything else in terms of reading it. What is important and what firmware can impact is the drive's ability to read certain cd formats (or the structure and organization of the files on the cd), such as PhotoCD, CDEXtra, Mixed Mode, etc. And yes, it can also effect a drives compatability with different physical media characteristics.

DrMDJ, I have no idea what your talking about at all. Maybe you can post a link to back up that your saying all drives can read everything? Or did you say they couldn't read everything?
If all files are just bits of data which we agree on... then why wouldn't it be able to read every file it ever comes accross? Why ever need to flash a drive. The reason is, it sees the file and doesn't know what it is, how long it is, or even where the file begins. To be able to read the file it needs to know what the file is. I have flashed many many a drive to be able to read divx and xvid. Why is that? If it's just bits of data isn't it? Why would flashing those drives suddenly make them capable of reading the data when they couldn't before?
The reason is there is a table of contents stored on a prom on the drive that the drive has use to recognise the file format to allow playback. The things the cd drive has to be able to know about the file on the cd drive is the type of file, the length of the file and where the start and end of the file is thats on the cd. If it cannot tell what the data is it cannot identify any of the other information it needs to read the data!

Edited just to say not only were cd-rom drive firmware updated for newer Divx and Xvid playback compatability... they were also flashed so they could read MP3 files as well. Many old 4 speed and older drives could not read MP3, as that format wasn't around back then. Flashing them to a newer Firmware allowed them to recognise and read the MP3 format. Flashed a few of those as well!
Something like MPEG (or Divx, etc) is a file format, something that defines the characteristics and structure of a file. CD type devices do not care about this, care about individual file structures. A file is a file is a file to the device. What the device does care about, and what can keep it from reading a given cd, is the structure and organization with which the collective set of files have on the disc, ie. the "CDs" structure and organization. So, for instance, you could have a CDDA (cd audio) track on a cd that is has the basic CDDA structure/organization and the cd drive could read teh disc, read the track, and allow it to be played back (using the appropriate software). On the other hand, you could have that same exact track on a cd disc that has a Mixed Mode type/structure and a given cd drive might not be able to understand this structure, and therefore could not read the same file off for playing. Another example.... You could have a single session CD with 10 data files on it and a give drive could read it. But if you had those same 10 data files on a cd that was written as a multi-session disc, with 5 files in the first session and 5 in the second, the same cd player could not read the second session unless it could read multi-session format CDs.
These are but only two examples. But the bottomline is that the readability of a given file from a cd type drive is not governed by the format of the file, but rather by the format/structure of the cd disc.
You might want to read something like the CDRFAQ to get a better feel for cd organization and structure.
Cd drives in computers do not decode MP3s, DIVx, etc. Standalone home DVD players are a differnent story, and it must be these that you are talking about. They do have firmware that they use for playback, because they are self-contained units that both have to read back the information on a disc, and play it. But PC cd drives (or dvd drives) are not self-contained in this way. They are only the "read" device (there are some differences between dvd and cd drives, but that is not the issue here). These drives rely on other hardware and/or software on the pc to do the actual playback. And if that means decoding or such then it is done by this software/hardware, not the drive.

The drive has to be able to recognise the file type. It is a requirement to read the file. otherwise the reading of all data on a disk would not be specific to it's length. The drive would just read whateverl data untill it reached the end of the disk!
Btw I never said anything about decoding a file. I wrote about the drive being able to read the file type. Not decode it.

PS. You made a reference to flashing drives so they could read MP3s. I would be very interested in seeing that firmware. MP3 is a file format. And a cd drive (in a computer) does not know the difference between it and any other file, nor does it care. and MP3 is like one of a million files of data. Software on the PC decyphers and playback the MP3, not the drive.
so your telling me that flashing the firmware on any drive will not increase it's abilities to read file types?
OMG you cannot be serious here? That is the primary reason to flash a cd rom!
Flashing a drive "can" increase its ability to do things like say be able to read a greater variety of cd-rs (brands) for example. And you might be able to flash some old drive so that it could read something like, say, the multi-session type discs I referred to earlier. But no, you cannot flash a drive (in a pc, and in home players you are not flashing the drive but the player's rom), nor do you need to, to simply read in MP3s or DIVX files or JPGs or whatever so they can be handled.
JAL, just try the codex's. Think you will be pleasantly surprised.
