Firefox - goes like a slug ?

HAve only been seriously useing Firefox for about 2 months or so.. Until recently 0.9.2 was doing well but about a week ago it would use 80-90% of cpu time it became a real slug..
Uninstalled and upgraded to 0.9.3 .. now it seems one on 5 starts and it is ok.. maxing cpu usage during its start and webpage load..

i am a bit of a pig with how I use it .. with some 8 pages loading at start.. but shutting these off till there is only one tab in use makes no difference and allowing it to start with only one tab has made no difference..

The system that is having the problem is a AMD 2000+ with 512Mb with WinXP pro.. oh 120GB hdd with approx 40% free space..
Have no problems running IE6.1 or MYIE2 (same number of stsrt up tabs and sites)


I had run Process explorer..and one difference I see is the number of "Handle Threads" of that are opened..
MyIE2 has 20 of MyIE.exe and
firefox aprox 100 of firefox.exe
haven't checked this when firefox is ok..

Any thoughts? I have run avg/adaware se/spybot s&d/ winpatrol.. haven't done a online scan with trend as yet..

Any other thoughts.. ideas to probable cause..

Ok just testd now.. and its cpu ussage after full load was below 10%..at moment 0% and only 20 threads of Firefox.exe..droped from a max of 35 while loading

Undertaker02, I am trying firefox now. I don't see what the big deal is with it, it maybe a tad bit faster for surfing, I still say IE is just as GOOD.

I opted to Do a clean install of WinXP.. (the install was 2yrs old )

problem has returned..and now have noticed a link..

Jupmedia..and AVG

Of the pages set to open when firefiox opens 3 of them are hosted by Jupmedia .. if I close each of these in turn the CPU usage drops to either zero or near zero.. The problem seem to be page content ..ie an advertisment.. .. the home page of VirtualDr is fine but some of the thread pages shoot cpu usage above 80%.. or viceversa. the home page today shoots the cpu above 80% and This thread is ok) After a bit of checking the smae problem occures on the other Jup media sites as well.. funny thiough..it is only this AMD machine, a AMD machine at work (duron 900) hasn't encountered any probs.. (winXP/2K)..
AV progs are different.. This one: AVG (just upgraded to V7 from the freebie v6), others at home NAV 2003.. and work is NAV corp(Win2k)/VET(winXP)..

so with the install of XP now being 3 days old(starting into the 4th day) and the problem resurfacing on the 2nd day ..(the day that I installed AVG 6)...

Or have I been to quick in blaming AVG..

So I tke it no one else has noticed a problem? at all?

My prefered browser is MyIE2, But is is a frontend for IE.. and I have grown tired of cleaning the crap out of other peoples systems and at least with mozilla firefox I had a MYIE2 ilike interface, with out the adware getting in.. as for speed.. page loading is certainly better..it should seeing as it opens upto 20 ports to d/l a page

I take it that I am alone with this problem? HAs any one else BOTHERED to check if the same is happening with them? Anyone..?? just open task manager and watch the cpu usage..

I can say now that I have now noted this problem with several of the work PC's..On the Jup-Media (Internet.com) sites like VirtualDr..

ahh well.. thats computers..

(oh btw Linux fans.. does it in with FF in SUSE9.1, Red Hat 9, and Mandrake 10..thus I ahve ruled out M$..)

I use firefox at home and work. At work, I have Windows 2000 FF v0.8. Ut constantly uses 80% CPU, and at home on XP, around 50%. It doesn't seem to affect the computer that much though. Not sure why. Do you see a difference in performance of the computer with FF on/off? I haven't been able to figure out what makes it use so much of the CPU. Do you have any extensions? That may be causing the problem.

I use Firefox as default browser, and CPU is 2-3%. You don't say, but have you tried AdAware and SpyBot S&D looking for that Jupiter stuff?

This is 4 more than in the previous install..

typical idel cpu usage is less than 2%
any page actiuvity..i scrolling, typing will bounce the cpu upto 20%.. and dl a page or 8 will bounce it up to 50 or 60% fpr a short time..

With the cpu usage at 50 or 60% constantly can be a bit of a pain.. but only when i have a few other apps running..OLEXP, Word, Excel, and forget any idae of running VirtualPC ..

But when the cpu usage had climbed to >80% it was a true slug.. scrolling was jerky, ather apps.. forget them.. close them

As I commented earlier, the only sites that I had noticed the problem on were the Jup Media owned sites (sry Jup), like virtualDr , AntiOnline and Wifi Planet..(just visited.. OUCH.. straight to 90% CPU.. the forums would't load..haven't been there this week till now)

hmm it must be some load that dosen't complete like a bad advertisment.. seem to remember a discussion on one of the forums a while ago..perhaps last year....

hmm Il'll see what happens when I monitor a connection with TCPView..

BTW: Jupiter I refer to is the company that owns tEarthmedia, Internet.com etc.. It isn't spyware (well some tracking cookies get loaded from them from time to time)..

There I went, leaping before I looked. Companies shouldn't have adware sounding names, LOL.

didnt realise untill you mentioned how jup media could be mistaken for a certain adware produict.... makes two of us .. I assumed... oh well your thoughts were in the right place..

BTW: now I have TCPview running and a packet sniffer.. every thing is fine and dandy again.. browsed through a number of threads in Wifi Planet and all went well.. oh well tomorrow. nite all

HAd narrowed the problem to SOME ADvertisements that are a Flash Movie..seems many of the Intel and HP ads are just that.. The most troublesome ones were a HP banner most recently on VirtualDr..

Have now just updated Firefox to V0.1pr

will see how it travels

The CPU intense shockwave ads on VDr have come up a few times, I updated my hosts file to block out the ad sites, seems to do the trick, although they recently changed to use a different sit to the one I had blocked

Thanks for that info.. I have blocked the few that you have mentioned.. and no probs with the cpu usage so far..

I tested the add links in IE6 and in FF rc1.. and the cpu usage goes up slightly ~10% max in IE.. but jumps above 60% in FF.. add a second Flash add (one that is harmless normaly) and the CPU goes over 90% ..

A couple of friends on another site are testing this as well and it seems to make a difference on the CPU type ..unconfirmed but early results.. AMD has the bigest prob.. my home and work PC's are AMD's.. the Intels P4's show a usage jump but not to the same level..

So it is block the adds for now.. sorry Jup media.. hmm the proxomotron.. havent tested it with FF yet..

I had noticed similar problems with certain flash-ads, vdr also being one of the sites, but I'm holding out on whether it's a Moz or Macromedia issue.

One other quirk I've noticed is that on my cable provider's personal homepage (Rogers Yahoo!), the flash videos for things like news previews etc. that used to work under 0.93 now give me a graphic telling that flash is required. Macromedia's site confirms I do have flash. Not a big deal since I don't really use my personal page on Yahoo!, but also seems to point to an issue with flash.

FWIW on the linux front, though, I haven't noticed the same problem in 1.0 running under Fedora Core 2, but then I don't use it as much so I may just not have run into it.
