W2k...
Since migrating to W2k, computing just got a little more difficult, but at least, it's at a higher level of security than with W98.
I provided everything in the Default User account first, and then specified another User with no admin privileges, so there are two levels of operation.
- 1. Default User with admin privileges. Used as necessity dictates.
All system abilities available, install, turn on/off, update/change settings at will.
All security provisions available, install, turn on/off, update/change settings at will.
All installed programs available, turn on/off, update/change settings at will.
All drives, folders, files available.
2. Big-Dummy User with no admin privileges. For most everything, and especially for browsing the Internet.
All system provisions operational, but no ability to turn on/off, or change settings. See Footnote 1
All security provisions available, turn on/off, update/change settings at will. See Footnote 2
Some installed programs available, Install, turn on/off, update/change settings at will. See Footnote 3
All drives available, but not all files and folders on the C drive are available.
Footnote 1: Operation and Updating appear to be controlled automatically, but I think a Windows update can be initiated.
Footnote 2: With the exception of my Internet Security program retaining all previous settings, some of the 3rd party security programs (Spybot, Spywareblaster, etc) retained previous settings, and some didn't. Had to go through them all to
make sure they were correctly spec'd.
Footnote 3: Not all previously installed programs appeared. The ones that did, were installed previously to the Program Files folder. The VB runtime was recognized and so was my previously installed DUN. The programs appeared as a fresh install as if to have never been used on the computer before. All of the small utilities that don't require an actual install did not appear, so I had to duplicate them.
One little default provision that needs to be changed is, activating Outlook Express for other user accounts. So far, it is only active in the Default User account.
It's all progressing nicely. Any helpful observations or suggestions?
