Transfer of Files

This may not be the right forum for this topic and if not, please let me know where to post it.

We are FIANLLY getting a new computer! It will have WinXP, we currently have Win98. What I want to know is how do we get all our files onto the new system? Do we have to save each file on a floppy (such as documents in My Documents) and our contacts in Outlook, or is there an easier way to transfer them? Keep in mind we are not great computer wizards, but can follow directions easy enough. Any help would be greatly appreciated. We get the new system by the 1st.

Things that can be done.
Floppy as you stated.
Use a burner and put them on a cd.
Network the computers together.
Remove the hdd and jump it into the new computer as a slave and then transfer the files. This would be the cheapest way to do it. Even if the new XO is using NTFS it will see the Fat32 . But the reverse does not work.

Thanks Train. How do we network them together? When we reformated, we did it by putting each on a floppy and then downloaded again, but it took forever. Just figured there was an easier way to do it.

Networking - your new computer should have a networking card in it - it will have an RJ-45 connector on it - it looks like a slighly oversize telephone wall jack connector. You will probably need to get a network card for the 98 machine. They run under $20. You can get a crossover cable to link the 2 pc's


Another option is to get one of the new memory sticks San Disk make one in 128 meg or 256 meg. The 128 meg costs around $40 Sams, Costco's etc carry them. You plug it into the USB port and copy files on to it. Disable the software, unplug it and put it into your new computer and copy the files off the memory stick. It will come with drivers for the 98 machine. The xp machine will recognise the memory stick immeduiately. That may be the way sinmplest way to go but networking would be better in the long run. Do goolge search on networking. There are some great explanations of the process on the web

My vote is for the flash drive (Pen drive, Disk on Key, there are several names for them). They are about half the price of a couple years ago when I bought mine, and I use mine just about every day.

Easiest, cleanest method of transferring files from Win98 to XP. So I would get the one with the most memory that can be afforded. You will always find a use for it.

By the time a network connection is configured between the two computers, you could be all finished using a flash drive. Even though a network connection provides faster transfer speeds, for a one time use, probly better to use a flash drive.
