Hard drive recommendations

I'm ready to order a second hard drive for my comp. I want to get at least 100 GB. I wanted to get a Western Digital 120 GB that I saw on Newegg, but some people said the drive died within a month of purchase. My current HD is a Western Digital 30 GB which has done very well over the last 3 years.

Should I think about getting a Sea Gate, Maxtor or Quantium instead? I want a drive that I know can be depended on to last and last. Of course I'd take proper care of any HD I had by running maintenance programs once a month, etc.

Im very impressed with my WD, but if you dont wanna go for a WD then id suggest a Seagate, i have been using them for a few years and have no faults at all, very quiet and reliable.

I wrote a few lines concerning some research I did on the WD 'special edition' drives awhile back. What I learned was that these newer drives have been outsourced to Mexico for assembly since about March 2003. Seems the quality control is very weak causing the failures and complaints. I have the 80GB but it was Mfg. in Jan. 2003 and has given me no problems at all. I also run 2 40GB WD's in the same case that date back over 3 years and have never let me down. Reason I did the research was because of a drive I purchased for my Daughter dated from Aug. 2003 that worked for 2 months and crapped out. If WD doesn't do something about this, my next drive will be a Seagate...

D**n outsourcing! It'll be the downfall of our economy. All these companies want to save a buck, so they let unskilled foreigners build hard drives instead of skilled Americans. This isn't meant to be xenophobic, but American companies should keep the work in America, not send it to China and Mexico.

I hope Seagate doesn't follow this practice.

There is not a hdd made in the USA. Anyway I have not found any new ones made here.

I didn't mean my remarks to be a slam against Mexico per se. Because as Train says,electronics are assembled in many different countries. My main b*tch is that many times the 'quality control' is not handled properly with actual 'company' experts on hand to oversee what goes on in these facilities. And,,it's you and me,the 'customer' that suffers...:(

Everyone knows the best electronics come from Asia.
