vmm.vxd issues
Hi
I just installed Win 98 onto an older Hp Pavilion (Pentium) When it boots, I get the error message
"Windows protection error You need to restart your computer
c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd: missing/unable to load.
Now I have tried using both a Win98 and a Win98se disk, to no avail (they are original copies). I went to this page
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q194679
and followed their advice, again to no avail. I can boot into safe mode, and I see the vmm folder in the system file. I also checked the autoexec.bat to make sure the proper path is in there (it is) . Iv'e tried loading Win98 onto this machine 3 times, and it ahs yet to boot up normally.
Any help would be appreciated. :)

Win 98 normally does not need the autoexec.bat file to work properly. See if removing that line in autoexec.bat helps.
If no luck, then reformat the HD, run Scandisk off the Windows boot floppy, and reinstall Windows.
If still no good, then run the antivirus program in Safe mode, and make sure that it checks the memory and the master boot record for viruses.

Thanks for the input, but I ran out of time working on this project. I just reinstalled Wind 95 using the imaging disk, and it runs fine now.

petflunky,
What you may have needed in that machine was an updated NDIS.VXD file. I forget what the old version was, but 98 seems to need v4.10.2222.
I ran into that same problem some time back on one of my machines.

Thanks for the reply. How would I go about getting/installing one of those files?

I apologize for the mixup....That NDIS.VXD has to do with video problem. I had two windows open at the time and I inadvertently inserted the wrong response to your Post.
I researched your problem again and found this which I hope will help:

It's pretty well detailed for info on how to fix this. Hope this helps.
Again sorry for inserting the wrong post.:(

Here's an update. Another guy tried installing W98 on it, and it runs flawlessly. This diff between him and me? He used a boot disk. I was booting from the cd itself  I don't know why, but it worked.

petflunky,
Thanks for responding with the update.

This can happen if your boot sequence in the bios has the CD before the harddrive.
