Help The Mod....

I bought a used hard drive off of ebay 10 gigger got a great price so I couldnt pass it up....I have a pretty high powered computer amd athlon xp 2600+ 512mb pc2700 ddr of which I run windows 2000 on my main drive and it performs flawlessly as a 2000 machine should....


Now...I bought that 10 gig so I could load 98se on it to play some old games thought I would just change the boot order in bios to be able to access this drive when I want to play....keeping my 2000 system drives completely out of the loop.....


Drive fdisked and formatted fine....did clean install of 98se everything went very smooth....UNTIL....I installed the chipset drivers....and directx 9 whichever version is on windows update now....then my video driver and sound driver from the installation cds and norton internet security 2002 from the motherboard cd...next reboot all hell breaks loose start getting out of memory errors on everything I try to do.....I know that 98 works best with up to 384 megs of ram because Train and I did extensive testing on it a few years back....but does anyone have any suggestions??? I have VVs powerful pc reg hack installed on the computer....did not make it as far as to enable it tho just merged it into the registry.....got tired of dealing with it last night

Going with less ram is not an option because I have one single 512 stick and it works in my 2000.....I do have another motherboard and 900 duron processor laying around so if I cannot resolve this I can put together another box just for these games.....but dont really want to....space issues and all. Lets see what ideas you call can come up with......and thanks in advance.

I have a feeling that Win98 can only handle DirectX 8.1b and below.

But maybe that's the FE and not SE.

What does DXDIAG tell you ?

Ok ignore that.

It's Win95 that can only handle up to DirectX 8.0a

Sarrkazztic, you need a boot manager/software manager, if you had 98 first then 2000 I don't think you would have this problem.
If you have partition magic you can get the boot manager.

To dual boot you should install 98 first then W2K as W2k then creates a boot.ini file that recognizes Win98. W2k and higher needs to mark itself as the active OS. The MBR is changed to recognize both O/S.

You may want to try and use the W2K CD and do a repair, so that it rewrites the MBR and should find "98".

Boot your w2k disk. Press F8, choose repair, run fixmbr and fixboot.

Nix--I thought it is the video card you have that determines what version of DirectX you can use. Most of the video cards in PC's that were sold when Win98 came out usually can handle DirectX 8.1 at most.

The way Sarr is booting is just fine. I use his method also.

DX9a is ok with 98SE but 9B gave me fits also. Had to do a format to get things right again.

Is where I get 8a from. Although you may want to try the 9 external link removal program. I never had reason to try it as it came out after my problem.

Wull try all this this coming weekend....The point of using the bios to do the booting of the hard drive....was to keep EVERYTHING away from my 2000 setup...I did not want this effecting it at all....not even to the point of altering drive letters....thats how detailed I have things on my 2000 system....I just want to be able to boot to this other drive at times to play games....and possibly test things.....its just a matter of going into the bios and changing the boot order from one drive to another.....its the simplest and easiest.......the problem I am having....is coming from out of memory errors.....I have 512 megs of ram...so I know this is not accurate.....gonna strip out the direct ex...and try all the driver installs again....probably remove norton internet security too.....to figure exactly where the problem is coming from...

are for a more recent type PC I'm guessing it's got a decent G-Card in it that can handle DX9+.

DUH..... If I would of really read your post with both Eye's would of saw your booting process. Thiunk your on z right track with drivers....

Nix....I have a Geforce 4 Ti4200 not the best in the world by todays standards....but more than what I need for the types of games I play.....and it functions fine under the windows 2000 setup.....


When I mentioned DirectX it was whatever was available on windows update when i did the updates....of course it was shortly after that when havoc broke loose.....I will get back to this over the weekend....have a windows 2000 server project that has to be done Saturday......Im sure its something simple.....may require another format and clean install....but I want to try Trains Direct X buster tool....have never had a call to use that before....it intrigues me.

I have used DirectX Buster before.

It worked well.

And yes I ran into the DX6 problem.

Just FYI.
I have old Mystic video card, W98FE, and everything else old, including me, but DX9b installed and ran with no probs some time ago.
