I ran Check Disk/Scan Disk with error correction replace bad sector options selected and I think it messed up the whole system. Bad thing about it was that I hadn't don't a backup in 2 weeks...:(
Is this a common cause or can it be by simply running Check Disk?
I'm unable to get onto the desk top, it reboots. Safe Mode freezes.
Sounds like you most likely have a corrupted harddrive. Scandisk probably did it's best to move things around and save your data, but if the drive was too far gone, there really isn't much it can do. I would suggest finding a copy of Disk Doctor and running NDD on the drive. Or, if the information on the disk is extremely important, don't do anything else, and get it to a recovery shop pronto.
If you just want windows to work again, you're probably going to need to format and start from scratch. However, if this has happened once, it will most likely happen again. Your best bet is to purchase a new harddrive and install fresh...

I was able to get back on with using "Last known good Configuration..." something or other. I've tried it before but it kept rebooting and then I tried it after posting this thread and it worked. Went and did a total backup to be safe.
The reason I ran check disk wasn't because I was having any problems but because it's been at least 6 month since I last did it. Several minutes after it completed and I got online, the system froze and I had to reboot. It did this several times till the system screwed up royally and then got some message about corrupt files...
I guess it's time after over 2 years without a clean install on Windows to start over with a fresh installation.

Whatever breed your hard drive is,,might try running the Mfg's diagnostics on it and see what that says...
It's a Western Digital HDD.
After I did the "Last Known Good Configuration..." option unknown to me it wiped out all of the Critical Updates on the system. With those being gone, guess what, I ended up getting the MSBlaster worm!:( I'm laughing about it now for some reason...:)
Well I ended up removing MSBaster, I mean MSBlaster and everything seems to be running back to normal other than having to reinstall the CU again.
My only guess is that Check Disk corrupted some files, I could be wrong but I don't know what else to blame. I'll check into doing the diagnostics later today, as I do have the diskette.
