This person is running road runner internet access but it's in an office where approximately ten to fifteen computers share this connection. When this specific person walks away from her computer, she loses her connection and has to reboot. I found a setting on her NIC card that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." I unchecked it, thinking this might be the problem...but she is still having the problem.
Any thoughts?
Does she loose her IP address? What OS?
I have no idea if she loses her IP address. How would I check? She's running WinXP.

(Does the little bubble pop up saying network cord is disconnected?)

No bubble pop up, no nothing. Just when she comes back to her pc, her outlook express no longer finds the server and she can't connect to a webpage. She's the only one in the office having this issue...so I kinda think it's something within XP. I'm almost positive she's the only one with XP.
In Outlook Express, go to Tools>Options>Connection tab and see if there's a check mark in "Hang up after sending and receiving." If there is, remove it and click OK.
On a full time connection, OE can't actually hang up but I've seen several systems on which it thought it could. So it decided it had "hung up" and refused to believe the computer was still connected.
The other possibility....Since this apparently only happens when she walks away from her computer....she have a desk anywhere near the office practical joker?
I checked that option in OE yesterday. I unchecked on the pop up window that appears when you click on send/receive...shouldn't that take care of the one checked under Tools, Options? If not, that could be the culprit.
I doubt there is a practical joker in her office. These are realtors and most are too busy to care about someone else's pc, even though it can be a cut-throat business.
two moon , i have this problem all the time. my pc stays on all the time when i leave it alone for 6 or 7 hours and come back even though it shows that my network connection is enabled the internet wont work unless it repower my cable modem and reboot pc , dont know what it is. i use road runner also, if i call them they run a tracer route and have me repower and reboot.
i use hide outlook and every time i boot up i get an error that says my pop 3 server has a error,usually the first time i try to connect to the internet after booting i get a page cannot be displayed always works on the second try though, i have been just living with it.

So when she gets up, it cuts off? LOL! Too funny! Unfortunately, on our mower we can change that setting and on this pc...I can't figure out what's wrong.

Personally, I don't have road runner...but from what I've been told be their customers...they're of no use when it comes to technical support. Most people I think get the run around.
