Windows Update Failing
I have run into a situation where I install a Windows Update and it does not prompt me to restart, but indicates successfully installed. I reboot anyway. Then, run Windows Update again. The same update is saying it needs to install. I can reinstall and go through the same process, but it does not matter - same results.
Any ideas on what is causing this and how to correct it so that it actually works?
BTW - This is on a XP Home system, but I have experienced it on a XP Pro system too.
Thanks,

Try going into C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and delete the 'update class'. Next time you go to Windows update it should ask you to accept a new activeX control. Say 'yes' and a new one will be installed. The one you have now may be corrupted...

Occasionally I come across a specific update that won't install properly for some reason or another. Normally running the update manually (by clicking on the Read more... link and downloading the patch from the knowledge base article) makes it go on properly.

Hi Jody,
If these don`t fix it, here is a MS link

Another thing that often works is to delete the "Catroot2" folder from X:\Windows\System32. A new one will be recreated next time you visit Windows Update.

I have attempted each of the suggestions, but all have failed for me. I even tried combinations of them, but nothing worked. I'm not sure right now...guess I'll wait a little bit and see if Microsoft somehow magically fixes it. If you have any other suggestions, let me know.
Thanks,

Jody,
Here`s something else to try.
Find the Update and click on "Read More". You will find a link there to download to hard drive. Download and then install it.
