Dell Latitude Motherboard

OK, Laptop guru's, getting no help at the Dell forum. Eye's knows desktops but clueless when it come to laptops.

I have a Dell D300XT CPi laptop. It uses EDO SODIMM, currently have two sticks of 64MB in it. Wanted to put a 128MB stick, max is 256MB. WOW $118 cheapest I could find, don't think so.

Have done some research. Apparantly these come in the following:

CPi
CPi A
CPi X
CPi T

My question is, if anybody is familiar with Dell Latitute is will a CPi A motherboard fit?? The cpi has a 13.3 LCD, not sure if I would have to change out the LCD connector.

Goal is to upgrade, I think the CPi will only take up to a 300MHz, want to increae that and add some memory.

Any insight would be helpfull.

I have two Dells, one of which is a Dell Latitude laptop. Crucial was recommended to me as the place for getting Dell compatible parts at the best prices.

There are at least two ways that you can use Crucial.com. First, select Dell as the manufacturer, then select the Dell's Model name.

The first Latitude that Crucial lists is the Latitude D400 but they also list CPI so I don't know which is the correct model number.

If you can determine the correct model number, then you can find out which motherboards would be compatible for an upgrade?

If not, then Crucial also does an online scan of your hardware.

Crucial.com was recommended to me by three different owners of tech support companies, which also get involved in upgrading hardware but I have not used their service yet.

I use crucial a lot. This is a D300XT so it would be a CPi D. I just emailed a DELL Ebay store guy to see if he knows what other motherboard would fit. I'm not spending$118 for a stick of memory. The wive will just have to do with the 128MB I have in there. Just read that a celeron 466 MMC-1 would work. Hopefully can find a different motherboard for it that uses regular memory not EDO.

I just had Crucial do an online scan of my Optiplex GX400 because I am interested in bumping up the memory. Unfortunately, Crucial said that they didn't have any memory upgrades. I have 512 MB and two empty slots, which I want to fill.

When I entered the Optiplex model number, it came back and said that they didn't have any parts for this type of system. I did an online scan to see how that worked and it works great but got the same result.

They do provide Online Experts, who can answer your questions during normal working hours, they are on mountain time.

I think using this site, is probably the fastest way to get your answers.

It really is a neat site.

What does the above information mean? If there are only 2 banks of 1 for memory and standard memory ONLY comes in 16, 32 or 64 MB chips, then how is the 256 MB maximum achieved. Obviously, I have missed something, which is not surprising since I am a hardware newbie.

In the case of my Laptop, there are two memory slots. Each one can take a 128MB stick for a maximum of 256MB. I currently have 64MB stick in each slot, for 128MB.

Most laptops have only two memory slots, I think.

Memory comes in a even number. 8MB, 16MB, 32MB, 64MB, 128MB, 256MB as you see it doubles each time.

I have a Memory help page, but do not address laptops.

Murf, did you find what you were looking for? I just wanted to add that all Dell laptop's have a service tag and if you use this service tag at Dell's support site you'll find all you wanted to know about your laptop and more. Especially specs for memory, hdd sizes, etc. This is just a FYI. :)
