index.dat

I have XP Pro

Which index.dat file is the one that retains a building record of the URL's you have visited?
I did a search on, 'index.dat' and it found about eight of them - when I opened them with notepad, none of them seemed to contain a list of any URL's.

Also, does anyone use, 'System Security Suite'?
Do you know which box should be checked in it, to get it to delete the index.dat file?

Thanks for the reply Creekman - I'd sighted that post, that's how I got onto SSS - but I still would like to know how to open and look at this index.dat file with the URL's in it.

Also, which box in SSS should be checked to delete this index.dat file (none of the boxes mention index.dat)

As I don't know where to look at what's in the index.dat file, I can't do a "trial and error " with SSS to see which configuration is actually deleting the thing!

Index.dat ? open it in notepad.
Me i still use the Safe mode way to del thos items. Easier to me, plus safer.

DrMDJ told me how to properly exit safe mode here

You can use a free program called Index.dat Viewer to view the index.dat file with urls. (Works Great!)

The box to check is under Internet Explorer and is "Temporary Files", this will replace and delete the old index.dat file. I confirmed this by just selecting that option in SSS and then clicking on the "Clear Selected Items" button. After I rebooted I verified that it was deleted with Index.dat Viewer and it was. hth

I found a new program about a week ago that I like better and has a few more options and is called IE Privacy Keeper 2.0

Simple and fast browsing history cleaner for Internet Explorer.
The program can automatically clean up all traces of your Internet activity at Windows shutdown, start up or when the last window of Internet Explorer is closed. The secure wiping option makes it impossible to recover deleted files. It will also delete the index.dat file, as I mainly tested it for that.
