I have a friend who had his computer upgraded. He kept the existing memory, 64MB, and got a new motherboard and CPU. The problem he is having is that on boot up the system recognizes the memory as 64MB, but once in windows 98se it only sees 48 MB. I cracked the case and noted the RAM was in slot 2 of two slots, so I put it in slot 1 and booted up but it still only sees 48MB. What’s up with this, anyone know?
Just a guess, some older computers, like my Dell XPST, must have all memory banks filled in order to work properly. This could be your problem.
Working from memory. In Windows 98 you can set the amount of memory windows sees. Go to start>run and type in MSCONFIG > on the general tab you'll see advanced(lower right) click. On the advanced tab you'll see a setting for how much memory windows will see. Change it to 64 MB, click apply and reboot. Windows should see the correct amount of memory now. Hope this helps.
It's also possible that 16MB is shared by a video adapter built into the MB.
Thanks for responding to my post folks. I does turn out that it was the onboard video that was sucking up the 16 MB. Thanks again for your help.
