in control panel, why not open user accounts and setup the password account there??
Hi,
Yes, that`s the way to do it. Try to make sure you have a good password . Make yourself some sort of code or a mixture of letters and numbers. But for goodness sake write it down somewhere too!

thanks all for the answers, new with XP...
It needs to be said though, that the XP paswword isn't "very secure". There's an easily available freeware utility that will allow anyone to reset it, and thus gain entry.
As long as you're using XP Pro with the NTFS filesystem then you can use file Encryption, which is secure. Have a good read of the online Resource Kit documentation, and make sure that you understand the EFS before you use it. In particular, make note of the fact that you must make a Recovery Agent Certificate before you encrypt any files if you ever want to be able to recover them later on after a re-install of Windows.

Hello,
Whats wrong with a bios password. On newer laptops you can't reset them without knowing the passord. Removing the cmos batter won't reset them and swaping the bios chip won't reset them. Even putting the hard drive on another system won't help as the motherboard encrypts the hard drive so it won't boot unless you use the same motherboard. I am not sure where the password is kept but I assure it is not in the bios anymore and not kept with battery power. Newer laptops are very secure now.
