Yup MURF needs HELP - Networking

Printer Sharing Can't get it to work.

Setup

2 Pc's and 1 Laptop

2 PC's connected by CAT 5 to a wireless router, (using a Cable modem)

1 Laptop Wireless

All three computer's no problem with the internet

All 3 computers in the same workgroup
All 3 computers configured as administraors
All 3 computers running W2K Pro

PC 1 (with printer) no problem
PC 2 can see PC1
Laptop cannot see PC1

All 3 computers have the following installed

1. Client for Microsoft Networks
2. File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Netrworks
3. TCP/IP

PC1 with the printer has Sharing enable in Printer Propertties

1. When I go to PC2 and try and install a network printer, it will not see it


2. The Laptop will not see and other PC in the same workgroup

What am I missing here?????

I've had problems before with my linksys router
the problem started when XP bridged my NICs
But there was still a problem after I corrected that
it turned out to be in my router
the clients table was all messed up
I had three listings for one system
So I cleared them and power off the systems
and restarted them in the order I wanted them listed

this probably won't help but I couldn't think of anything else.

Hi Murf,

Click Start, Run, and type "cmd" to open the command prompt. At the command prompt, type "ipconfig/all" (without quotes) to display the TCP/IP configuration. If DHCP is enabled and present, type "ipconfig/release" then "ipconfig/renew". This will renew your TCP/IP configuration.

This can be a problem if the subnet mask isn't the same or firewalls that are not properly configured. If firewalls are present, it's a good idea to disable or remove while troubleshooting just until you get the network going.

Update

Got PC#2 working sharing the printer. Cannot get the Wireless Laptop to recognize the Network. I found the problem was two fold.

1. All computers did not have the same log on information, I use Administrator for all three, changed the password to the same on all three and it worked.

2. Had to disable Zone Alarm

Now for the LapTop, currently downloading some updates, and will connect via CAT 5 to router and see if that helps.

I can ping between all three with no problem, but the Lappie will not see the network

The router assigns IP so the IP's look like this:

XXX.XXX.XXX.4
XXX.XXX.XXX.3
XXX.XXX.XXX.2

The sub mask is the same for all of them

When I try to see the network from the LapTop all it finds is the Workgroup, does not see the other computers. Any Idea's

Fixed. after I ran Windows Update on the Laptop, installed some security updates, I was then able to see the Network. Problem solved.

If the Laptop is hooked up to the router with CAT 5, it works.

When I go Wireless it doe not. Maybe you can't share a printer with wireless?????

Well, I'm glad you got it fixed. I'm not sure how those updates would correct the problem though.

You can share a printer with wireless. Can you search for the computer? Right-click on "My Network Places" on the desktop and choose "Search for computer". Type in the computer name and see if it finds it. That fact that it can ping is good, but if you cannot search for the computer definately is a firewall problem.

The Laptop does not find the NETWORK with the wireless. I do not have a FW on the Lappy, ZA is disabled on the main PC.

When I hook up with the Cat 5, it see's the Network, but Wireless it doesn't.....

I'm wondering since the router has NET built in Firewall, there could be a configuration problem there???

OK just noticed. In order to see the printer from the Laptop using Cat5, I have to go into NETWORK and search, then a Password Box comes up. Enter the pasword, then it see's the Network, Then I can go in and add the printer and it works.


I have all 3 puters with automatic LOG ON...

I have the exact setup you have, only exception is the OS's.. Win2k/XP Pro & XP Home (I know! but it came pre-installed & is doing what I ask of it so far!!) on the Laptop.

Am not sure how much help it is but the log on's/passowrds are pretty irrelevant as I have different log on's for each of the PC's & a Wireless connection, all with none of the problems you are receiving.

Is the Windows Firewall enabled on the Wireless LAN connection on the Laptop? if so, switch it off.
As I'm sure you are aware, if it see's the Network via Cat5 then the problem is almost certainly with the Wireless settings..

My pea brain kind of narrowed it down to that. Thanks for the JOLT, will have to check that and lets ya know.

Make sure radio on a wireless network adapter isn't disabled.

Make sure your wireless adapter is enable -if your other lan card is enabled you will be blocked - also make sure your encryp. setup
matches other wireless cards.
If your laptop rec's a IP address from your wireless hub , then it a matter of tweaking the card setting to match your hub
you will be ask to log on pc with printer
