How to do New Install of win2000 on Clean HD?

Starting with a AT Clone.
AMD K6-3D Processor
Maxtor 4GB HD
MB is Aladdin 5-2A5KKG5CC-00 MFG, 3/12/1999
Ram:192MB Dimm PC-100
Video: ATi mach 64
Bios: Award Ver: 4.51pg 1998

I have the win2000Pro CD and the Quick Start Guide.
Minor Problem: The Guide starts out assuming you have just installed it successfully, and this is just the configuration.

I say the HD is clean as I just used a win 98 start up boot disk to:
FDISK, format
I had a set of four floppies from a friend who installed his win 2000 and made set from his.
I turned off the computer, inserted the first of the set and turned on the computer. I went through all four floppies ok.
The directions then told me to insert the win2000 CD rom and hit enter. I did and hit enter.
Nothing happens, that screen just stays there. The CD rom does not start up to begin the installation.
Where do I go from here? Thanks, Joe

Good article on win2000 installation.
I had a couple problems though:
I had to set the CMOS to boot from CD rom first. But then it still would start set up.
I figured out the CD-rw drive was not being recognized in start up, so I swapped it out with a regular CD rom drive and set up started and proceeded almost flawlessly till I got near the end of set up and started getting errors that setup could not find:
filetxfaux.dll and itsaid to insert disk labled Service pack 4.
I later figured out by looking at the CD cover that the win2000 cd had service pack 4 included.
I could not find it on the CD and skipped it and another called Dialer.exe and also could not find:
the file C:\winnt\system32\msdtctm.dll for the Distributed transaction coordinator.
Will see later how this affects things.
For now after restarting and bringing up the Error again "Winlogon.exe" unable to locate DLL txfaux.dll could not be found" my desktop came up ok.

It can often help to copy the i386 folder off the CD onto the hard drive first (eg using a Win98 boot floppy) and then install from there using i386/winnt.exe

One option you have if your C drive is now not using NTFS is to do a repair installation from such a local i386 folder. You might find it copies those missing files correctly.

If you are using NTFS and therefore can no longer use a Win98 boot floppy to initiate such a repair it may be possible to do it by launching i386\winnt32.exe from within Windows. This is normally used for upgrading an existing installation or doing a clean install. I've never tried following the wizard through far enough to see if you can repair an existing installation from it though. Perhaps someone else reading this thread knows the answer to that...?

just curious to why your using the windows 98 boot disk to fdisk as to getting hd ready for 2000 installation?

that might be part of your problem, see if you use your windows 2000 disk and put it in it will auto boot on start up and it will ask you if you want to set up windows 2000. I forget the set up but what you want to do is get to the screen where it says install new version of windows 2000. YOu will then have to hit F8 key to accept agreement. (once you see this you are going in the right direction) After you have accepted the agreement you will be taken to where you can delete the partitons you have already created. It will then ask you to create a new partition (using NTFS) and install windows.

Yup - can save a lot of time copying files from the CD each time, even if you've got a smallish HD like towjoe42 has. He can always delete the folder later on when he's got a stable setup.

This can be done by hitting F8 when the boot menu appears, and selecting "Safe Mode Command prompt" to get the tarted-up W2K version of "DOS". (cmd.exe). Navigate to the folder, and WINNT (enter) will start the ball rolling.

The previous method (safe mode/prompt) will work with NTFS, of course. I've tried using WINNT32 from within windows, but failed miserably - the install/repair started fine, but got hung saying it couldn't find the EULA file (which contains the product key) even though it asked for the product key earlier! Sassn' frassn' dumb install programs (disappears into distance still muttering.....)

Ooh now I never knew you could do that sort of thing from that command prompt. One question though:
winnt.exe is a 16-bit application - I thought that the so-called "command prompt" in Win2000 was still a 32bit environment...?

Absoblurrylutely right Andrew - it's my memory playing me up, and to prove that I was wrong, I just tried it, and got chewed out about trying to run a 16-bit app in a 32-bit windows environment. It's just that I'm sure I've started a W2K repair from SOME kind of command window.

Perhaps I dreamt it. Perhaps it was a nightmare. I can hear the CDROM whining, I can see a blue box flashing before me, with the words "copying files".....

By the way, did you know that windows is a 2-bit operating system? The bit you buy, and the bit you need to buy to turn it into an operating system.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. right now much of it is a little above my head seeing as this is the first time for win2000 install.

The computer I am practicing on is newer than any I have had.
I have pleanty of time to practice with it and win 2000.

someone asked why I used a win 98 boot floppy to start the installation and fdisk and format.
Just ignorant I guess, not knowing what else to do.
The instructions in the booklet with the win2000 CD was useless for the initial installation, it started out assuming you already installed it, and the book was just for configuration.

After my initial posting, I went o Microsoft as some of you provided links, and printed the instructions for New installations and upgrade installs.

This was after the fact.

I had two problems starting the initial installation.
a. I did not know my CD-rw drive was not working, but I could not get the win2000 cd to start the set up from it.
I also had a previous win98se on the hard drive, so that is why I used the win98 boot disk to FDISK AND FORMAT.

I then set the cmos set up for the machine to boot from C: first.
It still would not work, until I realized the CD-rw drive was not working.
I replaced it with another CD rom drive, and restarted and the win2000 setup began.
Then entered the second mistake.
Early in the setup, it asked me about availability of service packs.
Being ignorant I did not opt for that and believe that is why I got the Errors I mentioned and which you all have offered possible solutions.
Rather than spend much more time with those, can some one tell me if I can just start the setup procedure again and will the re-install repair the missing files, if I opt to add the Service pack 4 at the proper time in the setup procedure?
Or should I reformat and start over letting it boot again from the CD rom? Thanks, Joe

It's certainly worth booting up the Windows CD and trying a Repair Installation (NB this is not the option where it asks you at the very very start of setup whether you want to Repair - the option you really want occurs a little later down the line)

I suspect the reference about it asking you for a service pack is actually it just wanting the CD and that the CD has been given a name mentioning the service pack that is presumably integrated into it.

do this using a "winnt.sif" placed on a floppy disk and make sure your computer boots off of the cd first.
then "copy and paste" this below and save it as "winnt.sif".
