Hi all.
I`ve been asked to install a modem and a 40gb hard drive in a dos only machine.
I`m not very knowledgable when it comes to working in dos, so any help will be much appreciated.
The machine is used for a taxi company and the software is in dos.
How easy (or difficult) is it to set up a modem and hard disk in dos?

If the modem is ISA, it should be a cinch to set up in DOS. If it is PCI, it may require special drivers to be loaded at boot time, if it is designed to work in DOS at all. On the other hand, DOS is so much less complicated than Windows that it should be much easier to troubleshoot.
When installing that hard drive in DOS, keep in mind that under FAT16 you'll be limited to 2.1GB drive sizes. You'll have drives from C through W (or thereabouts.)
Is it possible the software will run in a DOS window in Windows 98? Although they'd have to purchase a new operating system license to run Win98, it will allow more flexibility in partitioning the drive, and if the modem is a PCI modem or Winmodem it will be more easily made to work.

As far as i`m aware this particular piece of software will only run in pure dos.
The modem will have to be pci as i wont be able to get my hands on an isa one.
Hopefully i can get my hands on some dos drivers!
My only real concern is setting it all up in dos because, in all honesty where dos is concerned, i am a complete novice.
I hope it`s as straightforward as you say.
One blessing is they do have software support that, according to them, will help out if i do have any probs........!

If you are using DOS 7.10 which comes with Windows 95b and 98, you can use FAT32 partitions which means you are not limited to 2.1gb per partition. If it is an older machine you may have problems setting up the 40gb drive.
