Several forums have threads going on this. They all point to the July 16th patch as the fix.

I had the same problem but thats fixed now. Im worried however. It seems that many users have experienced this error recently so what could it have been caused by? A virus or leech file being spread. After this error I have been having trouble with many operations on my computer. Does anyone know any information on this? Cheers,
Retro Kid.
Some, in other forums are associating this with W32.Spybot. It don't know if that's true, but it's clear that something is getting through that calls for full virus, trojan and other malware scans. Virus scanners, Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy should be going full blast right now on alot of peoples computers. .
depending on what operating system you are usingwindows 98 second edition has a problem with spontaneous shutdown...
microsoft has said they have come up with a patch for this but it does not work well
suggestion :
go to windows 98 first edition... it is more trustworthy then 982nd edition
if it is windows xp then it could be just a configuration probelm that can be resolved by doing a repair on your windows system
if its windows ME edition... I'd suggest upgrading to a better operating system as ME is ranked the worst operating system Microsoft has put out on the market.
Another site I use said it could be the W32 Blaster Worm.
Just seconds before receiving my first RPC shutdown notice, my eTrust AV gave me a virus warning: DcomRpc.exploit. The RPC shutdown put the virus into Dr Watson/User.dmp. I deleted that file, re-ran the AV and that's cleaned it. D/l'd and installed MS patch, A-OK now. I think eTrust AV did pretty good.
Recently one of my friends downloaded this 150MB file with dail-up(on Kazaa.... ) and then when he boots his comp it says some error about an invalid boot dirve size or something or other
I was going to go over and help him fix it ect, but he was too impatient and just decieded reformat it....
Well now when ever he goes on the internet it stops responding every so often (the internet stops responding) and it works fine on his mothers comp on the same ISP, ect.
(Now to the part that actually has somehting to do with this: )
It also decideds to open up one of those shutdown windows every so often too, I really dont know what he did..... It seems he reformats that thing every month now....
I told him that it probule has too do with the overheating or something with the PS...., but he never really looks into it..., too lazy....
well I hopes this helps....

Well, about five minutes ago, my computer did it....
I dont know what the heck..., I mean I have never seen it on this comp before
The weirdest thing was that once it did it all apps other than it turned into regular (classic) windows manifest instead of the win XP stuff, that was really weird too
Go to control panel>admin tools>services>RPC.
On the recovery tab,
Change from "restart computer" to "restart service".
