Microsoft Adds Antivirus Technology
Gene Hodges, President of McAfee, compared the potential inclusion of antivirus software in the Windows operating system to the incorporation of a personal firewall in Windows XP: The software improved the security of the operating system, but third-party personal firewall software still sells well.
Analyst Peter Lindstrom with Spire Security agreed with that assessment. "Some people are saying that the antivirus market is going to die because of this," he said. "That's hogwash."
from CNET
Like the XP firewall is brilliant
Hmmm chocolate fireguard springs to mind
RAV is a poor option, it gives so many false positives that it will put the average user off computers for life
Now if they had managed to snaffle up AVG, then that would have been a coup !!
Some people thought that the software firewall business would suffer when Symantec/Norton bought Atguard firewall to encorporate into their security suites but the market flourished afterwards.
Both increased awareness and the fact that Norton turned Atguard into a bloated, lesser product (by both adding their own "features" and disabling some of the original atguard functions and not fixing known bugs and not, at least initially, improving it's capability to stop new threats led to further development and sales of many third party firewalls.
The sad thing is, how many thousands of innocent, unknowing people are out there that take Micro$oft's word as the writings of the Holy Bible? And will play follow-the-leader to whatever they advise without the knowledge offered by folks who "really" know what internet life is all about.such as many right here at Virt.Dr. :(
the plot thickens..

Interesting. I wonder if we'll have to wait for Longhorn to see what they come up with.
Methinks this lil' jewel may not be far off:
Flunky : I have an idea Mr. Gates
B Gates : Speak up flunky.. time is money...
Flunky : We could buy out some Linux anti-virus software
company and leave the Linux users scrambling to
protect their beloved Linux computers
B Gates : Excellent... moohaahaahaa...
Flunky : And as an added bonus we get to pick up a crew of
highly skilled Romanian programmers who will work
for one-fifth of the salary that we would have had to
pay a US anti-virus programmer
B Gates : Flunky... I like your style... moohaahaahaa...
From the bottom of fink's reference link,in case you didn't look down that far...
