i need help setting up a phpbb message board

ok i did this once before with a friend of minbe on his server but now i want to put it on a server on the net (web hosting) but havent got a clue what to do.

firstly i need a database system called mysql the hosting company (www.easyspace.co.uk) say they support it.

question.

do i have to install it or is it already installed their end ?

also on the server when i login i get

httpdocs - which is where the webpages go this is all working fine

and i have

cgi-bin - which is where i belive the phpbb board should go... how do i like to the cgi bin for example to run setup ?

First you need a mysql database, this is provided and set up by your web host, you will be given connection details that you will enter when your setting up the phpbb forum. You will also need php enabled on the web server, go for a UNIX server they provide this in most cases, sometimes you have to pay extra for the database.

Do not put the phpbb in the cgi bin, that's for other scripts, put it in its own dir called something like forum, then your forum url would look like www.mike3d.co.uk/forum/ the phpbb is kicked off by a file called index.php.

Once you have all the files for the phpbb uploaded to the web server, it's simply just a matter of changing the permissions of a couple of files and entering in the url pointing to the setup file in your browser to start the install of the phpbb.

Above I have simply pointed out the preparation involved, the best advice I can give you is to follow the instructions that come with the phpbb to the letter, they are very easy to follow, the hardest part may be finding your way about the UNIX server, but remember file permissions can be changed with most FTP clients so you may never even need to SSH or telnet into the server at all.

i have found out that the host do support php but charge a lot of money for the database.

so i have left the database for now on my mates server and moved the forum's to its new address.

do u know of any hosts who would host my database that is quick i have heard of free ones but not been able to find one.

Tripod will give you a free account with a mySql database and php support, these tripod accounts are excellent for test beds, though some of the functionality is removed from mysql due to security and the phpbb can seem a little buggy on these accounts it is still handy to have one.

The host I use is xcalibre, they are a UK company who are cheep and very reliable, their tech support is also excellent, for the purposes of a phpbb forum you will need 1 database this would cost you £10 on top of the hosting with xcalibre.

I am not sure if xcalibre will host just a database for you, I have never really used any other paid hosts as the service I receive from them is excellent so I'm not sure of or can recommend any companies that provide the service you require.
