thermal compound.

As the previous post stated I am putting together my first computer. I am looking at my pieces here in anticipation.
I have an intel P4 2.4 ghz processor and the intel heat sink that goes with it. no where can i find notice to apply thermal compound (which I have). My question is do I need to apply it or is the pad under the heat sink enough? Don't want the machine to turninto flaming death

If the hsf came with a thermal pad underneath the heatsink, then the directions wouldn't suggest putting on Thermal compound because the pad would be enough. If you are wanting to apply some compound in place of the pad, you'd need to remove the pad and clean the area, then apply the Thermal compound in it's place. Don't apply compound on top of the pad, also if you do use the pad, remove the protective plastic clear sleeve/film on it before mounting.

Coops, may I suggest from experience:
The thermal pads that come with CPU's are usually not the highest quality. Thermal paste, such as Arctic Silver (link) are pretty much uncontested better quality. In other words, you will achieve lower temps with it.
