index.dat files

hi

what index .dat files are you supposed to remove from your system and how if so? i have about 4 different items, system save, cookies temp, and one other, one is like 13,000?

windowwasher, if so, reliable or disaster?

Here is what mine looks like in Find.
But I have this in my autoexec.bat
And have not rebooted in a bit which is why I have 288k in local setting\temorary internet.

you must keep your system on 24x7, no reboot? i saw a post on one of mine re vbscript here recently that some one deleted dat files of some form daily, i have never so just trying to learn? a cousin of mine in ca just used BE CLEAN on his new xp from langa site, and it BE CLEANED HIM, wiped out everything, how can i post here a screen shot of what i have as you did, i tried print screen and file, but save as was not there with find files? it was save search, here they are any way-

Shutdown > Restart to DOS and enter the following commands, each followed by ENTER

Smartdrv

deltree C\Windows\Tempor~1
deltree c:\windows\locals~1\tempor~1
del c:\windows\cookies\index.dat
deltree c:\Windows\history


After each of the deltree commands, respond Y after confirming that the directory is correct.

Also, if you do not want to keep all your cookies, replace the DEL command by Deltree c:\windows\cookies
This will, however, cause you to have to re-enter all userid/pws for sites that you visit.

Note: Due to the size of your \TIF folder (13MBs), that deltree "may" take some time to complete.

After you have done the cleanup, go into IE > Tools > Internet Options > Settings button, and reduce the size of the cache into the 5-10MB range, which should be adequate

well i guess i asked for it! what benefit will i gain if i do this as you have shown, (might take some time?) i know you don't know how efficient i am on time however, hour or two-day?

"some time" means minutes as opposed to seconds.

Deltree is used to delete entire directories, including all files and subfolders. That is why the, "respond with a Y" is there, to confirm the directory name was typed correctly.

What will you get as a result of deleting?
First, some disk space recovered, but more importantly you "should" see a little more snappy performance from IE.

Here's what I used when I was running 98:

smartdrv
for %%x in (cookies history recent temp tempor~1) do deltree /y c:\windows\%%x\*.*

I put the bold into notepad, named it "gone.bat" and placed it in the root of my C: drive. I edited out the cookies reference when I used it as I manage those with another app.

The other methods mentioned here didn't always clean them all out for me. I'd sometimes have to run them 2 or 3 times.

If you are uncomfortable working in DOS, there is a tool called AntiSpy which would delete these dat files as well as your internet history files, cookies, etc. You can find it at: http://www.softvers.com/antispy/
