Must I use Partition Magic?
Hi Doctors! This is my question, hope it is fairly straightforward. I have a 40gig HD with just Win98SE on it and just one big partition, (just C drive. I purchased a version of WinXP home and I want to install it so as to be able to dual boot. I just want to partition my drive with C as a 10gig w/Win98SE and D as the other 30gigs w/WinXP. I want to leave Win98 as it currently is without having to reinstall anything at all! Is this just possible with third party software (such as PM) or can it be done without it, OR can it be done at all?? I'm no computer geek in any sense of the word. THANKS for any help in advance!!

Is your drive partitioned at all right now?

-if yes, how many partitions.

-If no, if you dont wanna touch your win98 installation, Partition magic may be you're only option

I'd strongly advise you to use Partition Magic, it's by far the safest way of repartitioning a drive without disturbing the data on it. Once you've done that it's all straightfoward, just boot up with the XP CD in the drive, tell it you want the installation on the D: drive, and it'll take care of the bootloader for you so that you get the choice of OS to boot into.

There's just one small caveat - if you ever needed to re-install Win98 it will completely wipe out your dual boot option, and you'll no longer be able to boot into XP. The easiest way round this is to invest in a copy of Norton Ghost or PowerQuest Drive Image and take a snapshot of your W98 partition immediately after you've installed XP. You can save the image to CD-R's if you like.

The latest version of Partition Magic,,, and Boot Magic,,, is awsome... I've had it for awhile but did'nt use it until I saw a post here... Now I've installed Win98 and Xandros to my computer that only ran WinXp before... I'm thinking of NT4 and Beos...

Everytime I've thought I was messed up I was able to bring it back very easy... The times I've used PM7 when it was messed up it was messed up...
