Messenger Service Pop Ups...Where's My Gun????

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes! Lately, I've been getting several pop ups from "Messenger Service." They are all saying basically saying the same old thing about my IP being open for Hackers and etc. Even if I'm not surfing the net I get these pop ups. I left my connection open but everything was closed except my Outlook express and it was minimized and my desktop was all that was showing and later on, there was this huge pop up from Messenger Service. I just clicked the X and shut it. I have two anti virus programs I run and I know I'm clean there and I've heard others talk about these pop ups from Messenger but don't remember what was said. Can someone tell me what I can do to rid the puter of these or atleast from them happening in the future? I do not use Messenger for chatting or anything and never have it signed on. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!!!!! :)

There are various ways of stopping annoying popups -
certain firewalls allow configuration to block popups (eg Outpost)
AdShield can be used if you run Internet Explorer (or one of its derivatives) as your browser - it doesn't work with Netscape or Opera.
Your browser itself may be configurable to block popups (eg Opera)
Use a spyware killer such as SpyBot

POW !

After installation it'll start on background. Anywhen a net popup appears right-click the icon of pow! take add/delete popups and in the window you have list of all internet windows opened.
Click twice the unwanted one and done! - whenever it will open - would be closed automatically and immediately.

To disable Windows Messenger Service:

Click Start > Run and type "services.msc" (no quotes) in the Open: line and click OK

In the right pane, scroll down to Messenger.

Double click Messenger and click the General tab.

Under Service Status: click the Stop button.

In the Startup Type: drop down box, select Disable.

Click Apply and OK.
