The following file extensions with the following: .gif, .bmp and .jpg are image files. Those can be stored anywhere you choose to store them. If there is a particular file you are looking for, just do a search.
ecross, I realize they're image files. My .JPG and .GIF icons got hijacked by an M$ Office app and I want the original icon back. So I'm looking for the place the icons are stored.
Try right-clicking the file(s) and choose "Open Width." From there you can choose what program to open, and if I understand you correctly, you'll get the original icon back.
Hi DVOM,
I asked the same question for XP just a week or so ago here.
In Win9X system you'll simply go into Control Panel/Folder Options/File Types; select the file type in question; click the "Advanced" button and you'll see the "Change Icon" option there.
But in XP once a file type is associated with an appl. the option is no longer available. Now, I have never done it in Win2000 when Iwas using it so I don't know whether Win2000 is like Win9x or is like XP in this regard.
Do do want to change the appl. associated with the file types also or just want to change the icon but still associate the appl. with them? If you disassociate the file types with the appl. the icons may change back to the default Windows'. Or to re-associate the files to a different appl. go to Control Panel/Folder Options/File Types/Change.
Hi falcon2000, I've already uninstalled the app that hijacked the icon and reassociated the files with IE. However, that puts the IE icon on the files.
When I then did what you're suggesting, the IE icon gets replaced by a generic icon indicating no app associated with it. Even tho IE will still open it.
Under "advanced" I'm given the opportunity to "browse" to the icon I want. However, not knowing where the image file icons are stored I'm unable to change it to the JPG icon.
.ico files are not used for icons for file types. Those are .dll and .exe files.Quote:

When you click on "Change Icon" it should open up the .dll or .exe file that contain the icons for you.
Anyway they are stored in WINDOWS\system32. In particular the shell32.dll contain tons of icons (about 1500). However, I find the JPEG, GIF, BMP icons that Windows uses in the shimgvw.dll file (shell images view!?) Not sure are these the ones you're looking for. See attachment below.
BTW, in my XP, I found tons of icons in shell32 that are very nice to use. I extract a few of those and now my XP box has distintive icons for the CD Burner, Compact Flash, Memory Stick and Smart Media drives :D :D
falcon2000, thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for. However, on this machine,(not the problem machine) all I've got in shimgvw.dll is a magnifying glass icon. I'll give it a try on the problem machine later today.
falcon2000, I found the icons but they weren't in system32. They're apparently part of Iexplorer.exe. The following text from another forum is what got me on the right track:
Now go to Start>Setting>Folder Options
Click on the File types tab
Locate the .jpg file association highlight it
Click edit on the right side
At top click change icon
Click Browse
navigate to C:\Windows\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe click on that file
(your path probably will show C:\Windows\Progra~1\Intern~1\Iexplore.exe)
A window should appear with a number of icons and the one you want is in there
Click on the one you want - it becomes highlighted
Then click OK at the bottom
You should now see the selected icon in the upper left corner of the Edit File Type Window
Now click Close
Now the Icon you selected should show down at the bottom under "file type details"
(dont worry about the program listing window at this time)
Now click Close
At this point, look at your Explorer window and you should see that it has changed for all the JPGs to the new icon.
close all the windows all over to get fresh.
Glad you founfd them. :)
Yeah, IE uses those icons too. The ones in shimgvw.dll, I've found out, are used by Windows Image Preview.
