CD-R or CD Burning Problem?

I burned a music CD and everything went just fine the first time, every song played. I went to make a second CD using one of the same songs, only this time it won't play. What could the problem be? I used the same music file and the same type of CD each time. I am using Memorex CD-R's and stop running processes before burning each time (including AV and firewall). I also stand half a mile away in order to avoid buffer underruns. I am using Windows XP Home, if that makes any difference, and Record Now burning software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can't be of much help, since I don't run XP or Record Now. Are you trying to reuse the file from the burned CD instead of going back to the original CD again? We tend to think digital copies will be perfect 100 generations down the road, but truth is with many burning programs subtle errors can creep in. Maybe there's an error this time, just enough to give a problem. (I'm certain the RIAA doesn't want that little secret to get out. ;) )

And I've seen several complaints about Memorex on this board. Might do a search and read for yourself. Tried any other brands?

I was using a file that was on my computer, it wasn't from the CD I had already burned. Funny thing is it worked the first time.

I haven't tried anything but Memorex, but I am already dissatisfied with them. When I first got the spindle of 50 CD's I tried them out and found 10 bad ones right out of the box. I wrote the company, but haven't heard back (and probably won't).

Record Now comes with HP computers, so being the cheap person I am, I decided to use it instead of buying software. I will do that now. I will also see about different CD's.

Dang. Caught me in a lie! I have Record Now. Downloaded it from HP's web site. Must have been a mistake on their part, since the link is dead now. Fooled around with it, then burned it and stashed it away. Forgot all about it. It's not "bad" software, actually. It just didn't have the features of a couple of others I use. Besides, I'd had too many programs installed at once. Had to get rid of two or three.

One of our members, Misery, has the old free Sony software that they don't have on their site anymore. It works pretty good.

Feurio is also pretty good. It's a full functioning demo, which never expires, at least not as of version 1.65.

As far as your file being damaged, maybe it isn't since it's on the HD. Try and test another burn using a rewriteable, if you have any. Record Now and the Sony software will both write to them same as a CD-R. I can't remember for sure if Feurio will or not. Actually, I don't think Feurio wrote data at all, just music.

I'm running an HP as well. I've had good luck with Imations, TDK blacks (though some have had trouble with TDK's sourced out from Ritek-so are these, but theyve done just fine with me anyway) and Maxell "Data", the ones that Wal-Mart has 10 in a box. I use Sony, Imation, and Fuji RW's, with no problems either. I chalk it up to this Teac burner, an 8x4x32. Slow but sure. :)

EDIT-and for all my jibber-jabber I don't know if those programs will work with XP or not. But they're free.

I will check out your links & I am planning on buying some new CD-R's. Thanks for the list, I know just the kind you are talking about at Wal-Mart. Funny thing is, I passed them up for Memorex because I wanted quality. I'll know better now.

Hey, those Maxell's I used when I first started out. Didn't want to buy a whole spindle of something I might not could use. But the black ones came along and it's pretty much what I use all the time. Those Maxell's are almost 3 bucks more for only a cardboard box!? :eek:

Does anyone know if this is compatable with XP? What kind of features does it have? Is there a site where I can read about this, or am I out of luck there since Sony doesn't have it on their site anymore? How about the name of the program so I can look it up?

It's called "Sony CD Extreme". I use it on win2k with no problems.

Sony Xtreme works great! I have it as my software...it came with the Sony burner..I have build 1.2.290 ...think I better checkout the site to see if there are any updates. :p
Burned a cd the other night from my WMP, tested ok by the software, it burned the .wavs, but when I tried to 'listen' to it later, didn't hear a thing...wonder what I did wrong???:confused:

I am still getting "blank songs" using the files stored on my computer. It works some times and not others and seems to be hit or miss.

I did hear back from Memorex ( :eek: ) and they said I bought the wrong speed disks even though it says it will work with UP TO 40x CD burners and mine is 16X. This could be my fault, I am not experienced enough with CD burning to say for sure.

It looks like I need to start saving for CD software and more CD-R's, I can guarantee you it won't be Memorex that I buy.

Am I wrong in thinking that this software will not work for me since I do not have a Sony CD-RW drive? In the link that fink posted it said I needed a Sony burner for the update, or so I thought.

Someone think for me, I am not capable.

I believe the PX Engine update is to include more burners. Go to this link and scroll down to "download PX Engine". In the sentence below it, there is a link for device recognition list. See if your burner is in the list.

We also had problems with the Memorex cds. Now using Maxell and Fuji.

CD Xtreme works okay on my Teac. The only thing I couldn't get to work was to copy a disc to the HD as a temp file first. Always got a message the HD didn't have enough space, when I had 17 gigs or so. :confused: (Another member said he/she had the same problem). Everything else worked great.

My personal opinion is that Memorex is buck passing. But anyway, you can select burn speed. If you can get by with slower speeds, always the safe bet no matter the brand, then maybe you'll be able to use what you have left.
