I have a copy of Office XP and as it was installing it says:
Win requires newer Win components not detected. They are: Core System & Data Access.
I clicked Ignore and proceeded to install. Kept running into messages related to Win98Se.
Thought I installed it, but didn't.
What core system are they talking about? I'm running Win98; will XP run with Win98SE?
OFFXP: Description of the System Files Update
Overview
When you run Setup for Office XP, Setup.exe looks for certain files on your computer. Based on that search, the System Files Update installer may be started.
The files that are installed by the System Files Update are part of, but not limited to, the following Windows components:
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), version 2.5
Fonts
Microsoft Internet Explorer, version 5.01
Help
National Language Support (NLS) files
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) files
I have IE6; have to uninstall 6 to get to 5.01 What a runaround by MS. Guess what the M & the S stand for?
I can't believe this Microsoft nightmare. I have been at this for a whole day. It started with my computer crashing because of a virus, and I've been installing devices and trying to get back up to speed.
I have the Office 200 program but cannot install because I need Ie5.01 and can't install that because I have 6. Die Microsoft!
Still cannot install IE5 because get this mssg: "Setup has detected a newer version of IE...cannot continue." I uninstalled (I think) IE6, but still see the E icon. How do I totally remove this s***.

I have MS Works so I will uninstall that too. I think a version of MS IE is on Works. Die Microsoft Die!
I uninstalled MS Works w/ IE, IE is still there. It won't die!
Please help me totally get rid of IE so I can get the components for 5.01

HALLELULAJ! I FOUND THE PROGRAM THAT UNINSTALLS IE: IERADICATOR. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE THIS. IT'S A LIFESAVER.

FYI - you did NOT have to uninstall IE6...
NOTE: If any of these components, or a later version of any of the components, is installed on your computer, the System Files Update does not overwrite these components.
I'm still having install problems with MS Office 2000.
Has anyone come across a problem with the Windows Installer software? I am trying to load Office 2000 Pro, and the message I'm getting back from the software is 'The Windows Installer Software needs updating or is unavailable'. Microsoft suggest running INSTMSI.EXE from the MSI folder on the CD, but this flashes up a screen that immediately disappears, I have tried extracting the files manually (INSTMSI /c /t:c:\temp) and put them where they were required, but again, no installer. Does anyone know how to uninstall, Windows installer? Including any registry entries? Pretty tough one, eh?
Try running Microsoft's Windows Installer cleanup utility.

Sorry, but when I go to the MS website Knowledge Base MY EYES GLAZE OVER. It's so poorly designed and the words, letters are small and squeezed on top of each other. Bill should visit his web sites and see what a sorry site they look like.
I'm downloading Star Office right now. I need an alternate to MS Office.

IMPORTANT: The Msicu.exe and Msicuu.exe utilities are not supported on systems where Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0 or later is installed, including Microsoft Windows XP. Follow these steps to verify your version of the Windows Installer:
Locate Msi.dll on your computer. By default, this file is in the \Windows\System folder on Microsoft Windows 98 computers, or the \Winnt\System32 folder on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 computers.
Right-click Msi.dll and then click Properties.
Click the Version tab.
If your version is earlier than 2.0, for example 1.1, the Windows Installer CleanUp Tool is supported on your system.

The READ ME:
When you download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, simply run it. By
default, the Setup program will install the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility's files to the following folder on your hard disk:
C:\Program Files\Windows Installer CleanUp
Note that you can install to another location if you so choose. All of the
files used by the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (Msicu.exe, Msicuu.exe,
Msizap.exe, and this Readme file) are copied into this folder. A shortcut
for the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will be created on the Start
menu, (point to Programs, and click Windows Installer CleanUp).
Note that if you attempt to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
from a floppy disk, you may receive the following error messages:
Internal Error 2724. UNINSTALL 1,
Installation ended prematurely because of an error.
To prevent this problem from occurring, only install the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility from your hard disk.
HOW DO I RUN THE WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEANUP UTILITY?
---------------------------------------------------
To run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, use either of the following
methods:
- Click the shortcut for the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the
Start menu.
-or-
- In Microsoft System Information, click Windows Installer CleanUp on the
Tools menu.
When you do this, a dialog box containing the following message will
appear:
Continuing further will make permanent changes to your system. You may
need to reinstall some or all applications on your system that used the
Windows Installer technology to be installed. If you do not want to
proceed, please press the 'Exit' button now. Choosing 'Remove' will make
the permanent changes.
The dialog box lists all programs that are installed on your computer that
use Windows Installer. Because the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility also
uses Windows Installer, it will be listed in this dialog box.
Note that you can select multiple items in the list by holding down SHIFT
or CTRL while you select the items.
There are four buttons:
Select All Selects all programs in the list.
Clear All Unselects all programs in the list.
Remove Removes the Windows Installer registry settings associated
with the selected program(s).
Exit Exits the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
If you click Remove, the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will prompt you
with the following message:
Warning - All items selected will be removed from the Windows Installer
database. In order for the items to work properly, you must individually
re-install all items selected. Select OK to continue removing product,
Cancel to abort.
If you click OK, the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will remove all
Windows Installer registry keys associated with the selected programs,
including the entries for the programs in Control Panel under Add/Remove
Programs. If you remove the settings for a program that is currently
installed on your computer, the program will no longer be able to add or
remove components or to repair itself. To prevent problems, it is
recommended that you reinstall your programs before you use them.
WHAT IF I RECEIVE AN ERROR MESSAGE?

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility is designed to inform you if there is
a problem. The following table lists the error messages that may be
displayed by the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility and their causes:

DOES THE WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEANUP UTILITY CREATE A LOG FILE?

When you run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, it creates a log file
named Msicu.log in your Windows\Temp folder. You can use this log file to
determine what programs the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility has removed
from your system, and support engineers can use the log file to determine
if the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility has successfully uninstalled a
program. Please note that the log file is cumulative; each time you use the
Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, it appends new information to the log
file.
HOW DO I UNINSTALL THE WINDOWS INSTALLER CLEANUP UTILITY?

When you install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, it creates an entry
for the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility in Control Panel under Add/Remove
Programs. To remove the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, select the item
in the list of installed programs and click Add/Remove.

After I downloaded Msiu and ran it, I then took the Ms Office disk, wiped it clean on both sides (had smudge marks on the back) and voila it spins! it installs! It's on the computer.
