Network Woes XP & ME
I’m trying to give my son access to my computer to retrieve his music and to also use my printers when necessary. My computer runs on XP Home, his on ME. I have a Netgear router connected sharing the cable connection, at the present (this is not the problem). A few days ago I had the two networked, mine with full access to his and his with restricted access to the hard drive with the music and my printers. The following day we couldn’t connect to each other at all. We both still have Internet access! I have tried everything I can think of to restore the connection (his computer does show up on mine but with no access, you know the rest see the administrator. Etc…). I have no software firewalls running at the present time, as I thought this might be the problem. If you should have any ideas, I know myself, just enough to be dangerous. TIA

Have come across this problem on accasion using win95 and 98. I go to
Start/Find/Computer then enter the computer name and find now. Once found the problem resolves itself.
A friend of mine running aNetwork advisory service and using a mix of 98, XP and 2000 had similar problem when I visited him for a gaming session. He gave us each a small program called "Netsetup" (316kb) to run on the machines to be networked which resolved the problem.
If noone else can help, you are welcome to a copy of the netsetup.exe

Are you both logging on at boot-up? And if so, are you using the same username/password that you were when things worked?

readrj,
I ran the Find to no avail, found his computer. Still with the same message,
//andi----- is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permission.
The network path was not found.
Also I have run the Netsetup.exe on many occasions, still the same message!
Newt,
Yes, we both log on at boot still with the same username and passwords. I have tried changing the computer name and workgroup names, but none of the combinations I tried worked. I'm now back to the origanal setup, both Internet connections still up and running.

bugspop1 - based on what you have and don't have, I'd say that either a user account went strange (possible) or you are having an issue with the TCP/IP setup. Hard to tell without more information.
Would you describe how your network is structured please. NICs - USB or normal? Networked by direct connection or hub/switch/whatever. Workgroup & IP information including IP addresses and subnet masks. If for some reason you don't want to post the exact IP addresses (although it would be harmless) then the beginning 3 octets and hide the last like 192.168.2.x or something. Internet via dial-up or broadband? ICS, router/switch, or what.
Also, XP-Home defaults to having the "guest" account enabled. Check yours and say the status.

If you found his computer then the network is working. What you need to do now is set up the permissions. I do not use ME or XP... only up to 98SE.
Here is the answer for 98SE, it should be similar for XP & ME. If not someone else may be able to give better directions.
1. In Windows Explorer Right-click in your C: drive and select Properties and go to the sharing Tab. Select Shared As... and Full. Do this with each drive to be shared.
2. Go to: Control Panel/Network/Identification and check you are using the same workgroup name.
3. On the configuration Tab the Primary Network Logon should be Windows Logon and under File and Print Sharing both boxes should be checked.
Hope this helps.

I also couldn't get ZA to allow my network to function the way I wanted so I switched to Sygate Personal Firewall. (free)
