Java Applet missing in action
I am so glad to find this forumn. My java applet disappeared and no one knows how to fix it. I was advised by a contact at Sun Microsystems that there was no applet support in Opera 5.0 browser. He indicated that the only alternative was to install java runtime. 1.01
I went ahead and installed java runtime 1.01, but then sites requiring the java applet in IE 5.5 and Neoplanet, Netscape 4.77, etc no longer had the applet and I couldn't get the runtime to work either. I got an error message that said applet couldn't be found.
Currently I have the Java Pluging 1.3.1_04 and have deleted the runtime 1.01 Do I need something else besides this Java Plugin 1.3.1_04 to get things working?
Is the applet a Microsoft product or a sun product or both? Runtime is definitely Sun. How do I trouble shoot my problem? What do I check for on my computer to find out what the problem is? Anything tests I could perform?
I tried deleting Sun's Visaul Machine in hopes of the Microsoft Applet coming back, but it didn't. How do I get my applet back? Really could use some help in walking me through trouble shooting.
I couldn't get onto the Sun, Opera, or Microsoft Forumns for help.
Thanks,
Randal

Opera and MS Virtual Machine
Opera gives you a wide range of options. You can limit or accept applets depending on what file type you have installed or allowed under preferences.
Apparently there are two options for java users -- MS Virtual Machine and Java 1.4.1 sdk or jre. There are also older versions of the Java 1.3.1 sdk or jre and Java 1.2+. If you install the java while MS Virtual Machine is on your system, then the java version will work and the Microsoft Version of Virtual Machine will not work.
I am running Windows 2000 Professional and wish to reinstall the Microsoft Version, but use the Java 1.4.1 only for Opera 5.0 which requires it.
I am a little confused about the websites and information on the Microsoft Website. The following page was found on Overture as a way of finding the files that I need <http://www.overture.com/d/search/p/b...irtual+Machine> . Someof the information -- particularly on the Microsoft is confusing and contradictory. The MS site seems to indicate that they no longer offer the MS Virtual Machine because of the lawsuit, but then there is a reference that if you have an operating system earlier than Windows XP -- you already have the file. However, when scrolling to system requirements for downloading the file, it says you have to have Windows XP or later.
One of the websites on Overture it says that you can install Build 3805 of Virtual Machine for Windows 2000. However, on another link it says that you can not use build 3805 for every operating system other than Windows 2000. I am not particularly concerned about security -- I just want functionality.
Can I use Build 3805? Can the XP version be used in Windows 2000?
