chkdsk.exe /f

I am trying to run check disk with repair (chkdsk.exe /f). I schedule it to begin the next time I start the computer. It starts and runs through each of the three steps in about one minute or less. It then shows the report.

I have run scan disk on windows 98 many times. It seems to me that no matter what it is called, check disk or scan disk, one can't run in a minute while the other takes an hour.

I think there is something wrong with my scan disk operation. There is no way it can check a 40 GB drive in less than a minute. I have run this about a dozen times. Some from the command line in windows and some from the command line in safe mode. It is always the same. I believe I may have errors on the disk and want to repair them.

Can anyone help? Does your check disk operation run the same way?

You are the man!!! Chkdsk /r worked just fine. It ran for about 30 minutes so I know it did something.

Where did I get that /f from. I am sure I read about it somewhere.

It took me a while to understand the differences with chkdsk. Try chkdsk /? to see all the options. Chkdsk /f is the option suggested when you go to c:/? prompt chkdsk /f and errors are found in the first three tests. chdsk /r does five tests including testing the free space and it takes a long time. Note to see the report - it only stays on the screen long enough to just read before booting the PC into win XP - you have to go to: start/control panel/admin tools/event wiewer/applications/winlogon right click properites to see the report. No doubt someone can tell us how to stop the boot from occuring in the first place.
