Desperate! Virus?!
I turned my computer on tonight and check disc began running. All I could see were a bunch of dll files flying by and the word "orphan". Now nothing works. Many of my programs are disabled including Mcafee AV program and system restore. I can't scan for viruses and I can't do a system restore. Last good configuration did not help. I have an image of my hard drive created by Drive Image on another hard drive, but when I try to restore the image, a great many of the files cannot be restored - Almost all dll files. I just ran an online virus scan using Command on Demand AV and it found no viruses. I have McAfee installed and I update the dat files every week so I don't understand how I could get a virus. I am running Symantec on line scan now.
I am desperate for help. It appears my computer is really hosed.
Dell 8200 P4 512 ram Win XP Home
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Have you tried going into safe mode and running some scans?

I just ran Symantec online virus scan. It found no virus.

Sounds like a cleaner of some sort is running amok. Maybe a registry cleaner, or possibly a Disk Cleanup program. Can't think of anything else that looks for orphans.

I'm sorry, I don't have an answer for the original question. However, I would like to ask "What is an orphan?"

orphan files are files that you really dont need anymore.... example is you get rid of a program that you once had, it leaves behind files that are no longer needed.... Thats just one example:)
