P4 HSF and Arctic Silver
I'm snappin' together a P4 box.
Retail box 1.8 gig with the supplied HSF. Is there any reason to use the goo pad supplied ?
Or can I trash it, like I would on an Athlon ? And use Arctic Silver.
____
Also, that HSF looks pretty secure. I need to ship this rig. Anyone had any problems with the HSF launching in transit ?
Thanx.

Renovator
Welcome back :D
Scrap good pad off, clean with alcohol.
Brake cleaner works and the I wipe it down with alcohol after using it. I get the brake cleaner at auto parts stores. Leaves things clean and dry.
I recommend getting rid of the pad and use artic silver. Definately get lower temps afterward.

Hi Renovator, Good to see you. Agree with Train. Did that when I built BT. Worked well. :)

Thanx guys.
I've always taken them off in the past, but this is the first Boxed P4, with the Intel HSF I've done.
I trashed it after looking at it closer. Looks like Intel tried to go around the block to get next door.
The pad is foil with a carbon like coating on both sides. The foil is held in place with two parallel beads of silicone like stuff, So it would be a real good idea that those beads end up outside the die cover.
My guess is the black layers are there to help with the boundary layer of the foil to the machine marks in the heat sink, and then on the other side to the die cover. So basically they introduced 4 boundary layers plus the die cover.
Interesting study in thermodynamics.

Naptha cut the silicone, without messin' with the plastic fan housing.

How to ruin a cpu in one easy lesson.
Thanks for the naptha tip.

I meant, I trashed the foil pad. :)
I probably do it like you do. I start with alcohol, and move up through the hotter solvents. Lighter fluid and naptha are pretty close, but the straight naptha seems to have a bit more zing, and I haven't etched anything with it... yet.
The brake cleaner's a good one too. I've been know to get after dusty, dirty, heat sinks, (No fans), with carb cleaner as well.
Birchwood Casey's Gun Scrubber is another one that will blow the crud off and get the HS sparkling again also. (Fans off.)

Carb clearer is designed to leave a film, to lubricate things. Why I use brake cleaner instead.
I was refering to the foil pad, when I stated "How to ruin a cpu in one easy lesson". Have worked with electronic controllers where they caused more damage. . . . . . Pet peeve

Used most of what you guys suggest and the naptha and brake cleaner work well. What i've come to use now,is first,Goof-off(very powerful, but no residue),then a thorough clean with "good" alcohol(low water content). Then i use a lens cleaner pad to remove any fibers or left over gunk.
Good tutorial on Arctic Silver is over at:
