Shouldn't be a problem at all. From the brief description you give of your machine you only have two ide devices now (cdrom and hard drive). You can have up to 4, two on each of two ide channels.

thanks DrMDJ, silly question: ide devices?..any suggestions on what a good brand of CD-RW to get? thanks

Depends on your budget. Can't really go wrong with Plextor or one of the HP 9000 series. Avoid off-brands like "Bubba's Reburbished CD-RW and PC Coffee Cup Holder".

IDE = Integrated Device Electronics. It's a commonly used acronym (along with others like ATA) to denote certain types (the more common type that people have in home PCs) of devices like hard drives, cd and cdrw drives, internal zip drives, etc. But I'll spare ya the more technical mumbo jumpo of what exactly makes a devcie IDE. In your case your drives are IDE.
As for what cdrw to get... There are many good/suitable ones today. Probably more good than bad. Which ones are good for you depends on what tasks exactly you want to use the drive for. Some have more capabilities than others, some are faster than others, etc, etc. I wouldn't, by default, recommend one drive over another. If you can give a better picture of what you'll want to use this drive to do then perhaps I or someone here can throw out a few recommendations though.
