Hardware Firewall
Thanks in advance for any and all input. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Here goes.... I recently built my computer system, as documented in other posts here at v-doc. Time now for bigger, better, more interesting!?!?, challenges and learning experiences. I have an old Packard Bell 850 (stop laughing already--we all make newbie mistakes) which I would like to turn into a hardware firewall. What software would be needed. How would I interface it with my main machine? Keep in mind that my internet access is currently dialup with plans in the near future to upgrade to DirectPC. ???????

First off... If you can get any other kind of broadband get it and dump the Idea of DirecPC...
If you want a real learning experience get, SmoothWall, Astaro, Mandrake Single Network Firewall, Coyote or Devil Linux, Versions of Linux... Linux from what I hear makes a better gateway firewall... I use my server as a gateway/firewall [i]i hope[/i.] I have Win2k Advance Server running RRaS and NAT for the workstation. From my understanding of hardware firewalls this set up should work...

D'OH! Homer! As much as I use Google, and never even thought of it. Thanx, Choo Choo, oops I mean Train!!!
MiseryQ: Unfortunately, DirectPC is the only broadband option I have, but just about anything, if it's reasonably reliable, would beat my current dialup. I've kinda held out hoping against hope that another option would become available, but that's not gonna happen anytime soon in the rural area where I live: A mile off the main drag, with city water, but still 68,553 feet loop length, so even a remote DSLAM offers no hope for me, even when DSL is rolled out in the town where my CO is located, which will be in the not too distant future. We even got sunshine piped in the week before we got city water! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
