Operation 3 - 010
Well, we start another thread as the previous one was filled up or close to it. Still have to get four more items before I'm ready to build BT, the third in a series of Operation Delta Computers.
We have used the time given us to talk about a variety of subjects. Sarkazztic got quite a bit of work done on his equipment also.
Three or four of us are still working on the 32GB workaround issue of Compaq computers. We can't say the Bxxxx word either that is associated with this endeaver.
'Nuff said. Let's get to a question. When BT is built I will be putting in one or two network cards to tie my two computers together? Any card works or should we be aware of something that would or could cause an issue?

I prefer 100 base networking as opposed to 10 base because of obviously quicker file transfers....I would stick to the names you know and love....dlink and linksys as well as netgear... I personally prefer the Linksys brand myself...I have not had any problems with any of these cards...I have also used Realtek cards with no problems....then new game machine has an on board sis lan that seems to work fine too considering it is onboard.
Guess what the NO PROJECTS thing went right out the window this morning...a girl I work with brought me a machine to fix....symptoms include but are not limited to a "drastic slowdown in program loading" Taking bets here....I have not looked at it at all other than the dust bunnies that seem to be overloading it but I am going with the harddrive being either completely full or darn close to it......will post back tonight and let you know what I find. I also have 2 people here at work that want me to build systems for them in the near future...good timing in finishing up my own systems I guess

Hi goose
I am using D-link DFE-530TX PCI fast ethernet adaptor(s).
they are 10/100.
have used them to connect two machines with crossover. (worked like a charm, once I got it going.)
and I am using one for my cable access
remember steve-rey?
whe he wanted to do this kinda thing, we sure had a good thread on this subject.
(covering many "issues")
Later on, that thread helped me set it up for myself.
my first trial failed because I had faulty coax, but soon as I got crossover, I was up and running in the time it took to do a clean install. (I chose clean install since I had tried all slots, and several brands and types of cards with this bad coax, so there was a LOT of hardwayre mystery, erm, hystory on both machines, and I wiped it off.
it took about 50 minutes to do both machines, and I had a network.
the moral, get it right from the start, so you dont have to move the cards about, and you can easily do it without doing a clean install.
(it was my bad luck I had been given coax which was shorted inside.)

had model number wrong.
Kind regards, Jaak

Sarkazztic, on that first one why didn't you have them empty internet files, the cookie files, IE History, then scan disk, and Defrag. Had one like that last month. Did it over the phone. Talking about dust kitties etc., my wife got me a micro vaccuum cleaner with various attachments to clean inside a computer. Got all sort of nifty attachments and anti static near as I can tell. Had another person that tell me her monitor was black. No picture. I told her to plug it in. and it worked. Plumb amazing the number of simple things that can happen.
Three of you for sure like Linsky's so that's what I'll try. Train's got a Linsky router he brags on.
Jaak, I remember that thread (Steve-Rey) since I saved it on my old HD. I may have a hard copy in my stacks of paper somewhere.

This person is pretty computer illiterate and they are not the kind of family that would spend alot if any time on the internet....she is a sales rep for our company (educational computer software) personal history and instincts are what I am going on in my pre-case cracking hypothesis of her problem...

Hi all..
Yep.....I'm still reading and cheering you all on!
Thought I'd mention that Train talked me into that Linksys router you're speaking of. (Actually he was down right persistent that I get the exact one! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
It actually installed so easily, I had to email Train back for assurance that I had done it right.
So.....again a huge thank you to Train. It was wonderful knowing I had somewhere to direct all my hate mail to if things were going to turn nasty. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I don have nuffin thas linskys.
Daizy, I have been waiting for you to surface so I could tell a story on you.
People, Daizy helped me out tremendously on HTML "stuff" and I found phzzzz through her. (Not a beer Bistro) But in talking to her she allowed that she didn't know enough to get into hardware. But she gets ahold of Train and goes for it. And naturally I was kept abreast of the progress. But not by her. Guess she wanted to surprize us.
By her actions and hers alone she has become a full fledged "Delta Crew" member. Of course the usual perks and benifits are extended to her. There is one thing not allowed of course and that is "lurking". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Congratulations Daizy, you are talking the talk and walking the walk. Proud of you - knew you could do it. Three beers for Daizy. That's not right. Cheers beers hmmmmmm. Stick with the beers. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thinking about picking up a NIC card myself...then I'll have an excuse (for the wife) to build another system. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
GG1: What heatsink/fan did you get and are you going to put in a front intake/exhaust? (Or just keep the system outside this winter?)

That'll do it. And if you get tired of it, you can always sell it as a used helicopter prop... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
