Hopefully Easy Drive Fitting Question

Hi all, hopefully this will be an easy question to someone who has done this b4.

if i start by explaining how my drives r setup at the moment then how i want it to b setup.

WERE:
Primary Master: Main Hard Drive
Primary Slave: EMPTY
Secondary Master: CD-RW
Secondary Slave: DVD-ROM

NOW:
Primary Master: Main Hard Drive
Primary Slave:CD-RW
Secondary Master: DVD-ROM
Secondary Slave: Secondary Slave: Newly added Slave Hard Drive

Stacked in case in that order from top to bottom for easy plugin of eide cables

That is how i want it so that i can do CD to CD copying Mainly

also so that file transfer is quicker between drives, am i right about this??

The Main question is:

before both my cd-rw and dvd-rom were on same ide channel, the jumper settings are set the same on both drives is this right? (i thought 1 would be master and 1 slave) there is no jumper diagram on top the drive, so how do i know... or are cd-roms different to hard drive in that you dont need jumper settings???

Please help my other PC is in peices at the moment and i was unsure so i thought i'd ask you.

Hasn't any1 on here ever fitted a NEW CD-ROM.

That config is 'alright' for CD to CD copying, but some folks will tell you that it's better to copy to the hard drive first, then burn the CD from there. Takes a little longer, but there's less chance of bad burns.
You might be better off with the original config with the new slave drive. Direct CD to CD copying may be slightly slower however.

Hi there are a few reason y i want it like that
1. more reliable cd to cd copying
2. hopefully faster ghosting of main hard drive to second drive
3. and generally faster drive to drive file transfers as the pc i am on now is so slow especially for backup ghosting of drive

yeah i gotta argee wiv what u said about cd to cd copying but as far as i can see there isn't really any bad side effects to my wanted setup.

But what i wanna know is do i have to adjust jumper settings on cdrw and dvd drives? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Yep, you do. No diagram on either one? Will have to go to their respective sites. You should be able to find the jumper settings for both of them. Post back if no joy.

aahhh right, thanx, i better stop for a min then and hav a look, lucky really another 5 mins and i would hav been trying it.

lovley job m8 most appreciate the help, just spotted cs, sl & ma above jumpers on cd-rw so i changed that from cs to sl....any1 know what CS is for anyway just outta curiosity...

but no marks on DVD so i'm searchin 4 that 1 now!

not much luck yet, if all fails i shall just use diagram on other drive to set the DVD up as the back of em looks the same and i'd imagine manafactures wouldn't want to make it 2 awkward...

Do u think this is wise, can i break anything by doing this?

the DVD is a samsung SD612 incase some has same 1 and allready knows.

If you want that DVD-ROM as Master and it has a 6-pin jumper configuration (3-up, 3-down), then try putting the jumper vertically on the last 'column' on the right--closest to the power connection.
(Left is Cable select, middle is Slave).

yeah thas what i thought, thats the same as my writer, still gunna look for a few mins to be sure unless u know all drives with that jumper config r the same

would i be right in saying that if i would have set both to Cable Select then drive furthest on cable would automatically become Master?

And also that it doesn't matter which connector they go on just as long as jumpers r set thas what the drive will be?

You need special IDE cables to use Cable Select, so don't use that jumper setting.
On most systems (there are exceptions),it doesn't really matter which connector you use if the jumpers are set correctly (Master, slave), but it's best if you arrange the drives in such a manner that the cable doesn't get twisted (Master just above the slave).

sorry about all the questions but both my cables r marked master and slave so does above still apply (put em anywhere) just as long as jumpers r right
