Mouse goin' south?? Or??
Hi All,
Running Win98fe on an Asus A7v w/ Athlon850, 256 SDRAM, ATI Radeon DDR 64MB VIVO, SBLive! Value, 56K V.90 internal modem.
Problem: My mouse is a PC Concepts wheel mouse(PC2). For the last couple of weeks it's been getting really touchy. By that, i mean when i do something like click on the "start" button, the menu will flash up for about a' tenth of a second then disappear. Sometimes have to click 3 or 4 times to get it to "stick". This happens clicking most other things too. Both on "and" off the web. Also, it will do this: When i click a button on the shut down menu to shut down or re-start, it applies the button, then(as if it's reading my mind), it shuts down by itself. It will also do this when doing other things that require a double click or a "choose" then click. I've tried slowing the setting down in control panel>mouse>click speed to no avail. The mouse is about a year old. Do you think the contacts may be worn? Or is this possibly a problem in my OS?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi snarfll, How's it going? Have you cleaned the mouse and you still have the problem?

Just a couple thoughts here. Have you tried turning down hardware acceleration a notch in addition to the mouse speed thingy.
control panel >
display >
settings >
advanced button >
performance
Also if you try to do some things with keyboard shortcuts instead of the mouse, do these things still occur. If they don't, then your mouse could be the culprit rather than the OS.

When i've seen this before, the keyboard's
"enter" key has been stuck intermittently.
if nothing else makes sense, this could
be something worth trying...

Hi Greengoose n' all,
Sorry to take so long gettin' back with ya'..As to the mouse cleanin',yup, took him apart and cleaned all with alcohol(maybe got him drunk? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ).but, didn't help. Tried all sorts of settings to mouse speed and hardware acceleration. Nothing's helped that way. Keyboard is fine. Pulled it apart and checked all the rubber key springs.
At times when i'm in a folder and right click an item, then on the menu i click to re-name the item. If a file is directly under the menu, if i don't click fast enough, it will "open" the item below. Also, when i try to put a "check" in a box it sometimes takes two or three clicks to get it to stay check marked. Gets really frustrating to say the least. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Well, thanks for all the suggestions. Think i'll try a' plain ol' mouse i have stashed and see if it really "is" the mouses fault. If it is,,i'll feed it to the cat.(naww, that would get the "cat" mad at me too https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )..Oh well,,,
Oh,,an' Max?, nope, the keyboard shortcuts are fine. So, that's why my suspicions have been toward ol' "mousy"..

Just thought i'd let ya'll know,, it "was" the mouse that was causing the problems.
I swapped it out for an old two button "Artec" i had and the problems have stopped. Sure do miss the "wheel" though,(gads!, how lazy we get huh?) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
See ya' later..
