Best Free Download Manager?
There are a number of choices available out there but I am unsure as to which one to select and looking for opinions on what experiences users have had both positive and negative.

I like FlashGet the best. It has everything you can want in a download manager. I tried Gozilla! and it is too slow (loading and downloading). I tried GetRight, pretty good too, but shareware. FlashGet is freeware but ad-supported. I think it uses one of those "spy-ad". Site below:
http://www.flashget.com
OR
http://www.amazesoft.com/
Both will bring to the same site.

I think all of the programs listed are either spyware or add supported. If there is a free program meeting your specifications I'am not aware of it.

Someone suggested to me I use a program called Octopus available at the site listed below. Has anyone heard or have any experience with it?

I believe Octopus is spyware too. Here is a list on known spyware programs for reference:

Is there a list of non-spyware programs, and if so where (provide a link, if you please)?

There is a difference between spyware and ad supported. DAP is ad supported but puts nothing on your computer to report home like Go!Zilla and others. AdAware is a good spyware cleaning program and it has found nothing from DAP.

HMMMM....A list of non-spyware programs. I doubt it because the list would be so small it probably wouldn't constitute a list. You could try this site for such a thing:
http://ftpplanet.com/
Or you can give this page a whirl and see what you can find:
