Questions about Transfering vhs to dvd - Virtual Dr Forums-Computer Tech Support

Like to do this. Is there a machine that does this or do you have to do this thru the computer?

There are two basic choices. To do it with a PC, commonly done but it requires some cash, buy a video capture card (minimum approx 100 dollars max many hundreds) and a DVD recording drive (cheaper starting around 50 dollars) plus a few cables and do it at home. The DVD creating/capturing software usually comes with the drive.

If you don't want to spend that much money and only have a minimum no of transfers to do then check the yellow pages and find a service that does it ... maybe 20-25 dollars per DVD.

My video card looks like this in the back--see picture. The name of it is nVidia Geforce4 MX 440 with AGP8X

Can I capture video with this card? It has a four hole S-Video port I guess that's what U call it.

it depends if the S-video is only TV out or both... Most of them are just TV out ports.

So the s-video has to be in and out for this process to work? What does tv out mean? That I can view a video that is on my pc on the tv? Or vice versa?

Well, I guess the S-video could be only TV-in, but I've never seen that before. It is usually either TV-out or Tv-out and Tv-in.
Tv-out means that you can use a TV as a monitor. And TV-in means that you can view whatever is being inputed through the S-video

I really don't know, look up the card and see if it specifies TV-in, cause if it has that then you will be able to use it to put a VCR onto it and encode it into MPEG2

Nope. I found something at Tiger Direct called a Plextor ConvertX PX-AV100U Digital Video Converter USB 2.0 a small device that's usb2 that you can set on top of the tower and then plug in your vcr to it and use the software to put the stuff on your hard drive. Seems easier. That way it is portable to use on other computers. I wonder if the cheaper model is as good as the more pricy model though.

Do it with a set-top. I saw a Samsung DVD-RW set top player for $99 at Wal*Mart. It's as easy as recording television, assuming you're not trying to copy something with Macrovision protection. Save your computer for other fun stuff.

You'd have to do it old-school, like people would do with two VHS players. Linearly.
