Windows installer failing
Hi All
I seem to be having a problem on one of my PCs [XP Pro] with windows installer when installing any setup executables I get the following error message:

Tried MS installer reapir here which basically renames files and reinstalles the latest version still no joy
Starting the service manually gives me this error message:

Event log gives me this:
Event ID 7000
The Windows Installer service failed to start due to the following error:
Access is denied.
Anybody seen this before ?
TIA 10
PS cant run Windows Installer CleanUp Utility as this gives the same error message.

Have you tried reinstalling the MS installer package?
I believe this is the latest...

Also, have you tried manually starting the service?

Yes Fink installing any application including the update gives the error message as does trying to start the service

I had a similar problem with the windows installer msi and it turned out that bad RAM was corrupting data.
Also consider an overinstall of your OS. This could be permissions related.

I did a repair install of Windows, and then it worked.
ASUS A8N5X, Athlon 64 4000+
1024 MB RAM, WinXP Media Center
Asus P4 S533, P4 2.0 GHz
1536 MB RAM, WinXP SP2

Hello 104456
I`ve seen a fix for this but can`t vouch for it as I haven`t used it. You need to edit the registry.
1.Click Start | Run.
2.In the Open box, type cmd to open a command prompt, and click OK.
3.At the prompt, type msiexec.exe /uregister. Press ENTER.
4.Make sure the SYSTEM account has full control permissions to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key in the registry:
5.Open regedit
6.Navigate to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT top level registry key.
7.Click the Edit menu and select Permissions.
8.In the Group User Names list, make sure SYSTEM is listed. If not, click the Add button and type SYSTEM in the box labelled "Enter the object names to select." Click OK.
9.Click SYSTEM in the Group or User Names list and check the checkbox labelled Full Control under Allow.
10.Click Apply and then OK.
11.Close the registry editor.
Restart the computer.
Please take the usual precautions since I can`t vouch for this
Edit Just found this in my "library"..It has an extra command line in it

Elaine, a few improvements.
Line 3 should read:
At the prompt, type msiexec /unreg. Press ENTER.
next msiexec should be registered again
At the prompt, type msiexec /regserver. Press ENTER.
at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555175/en-us are more solutions

Dagnabbit!!! I dont seem to be getting very far here it may turn out to be an overinstall or complete reinstall at this rate but thanks for the continuing support folks

Looking like a permissions problem somewhere.

It does look like a permissions problem.
I`d try the fix back to front, i.e. do the reg check for permissions first starting with #6 in the MS Article which I posted.
Then do the Installer unreg/reregister

1. This fix applies to a few Installer problems, including yours
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 94 left hand side
Another suggestion
2. Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer
Does the image path in the right pane correctly point to: (modify drive letter as needed)
C:\Windows\System32\Msiexec.exe /V
If not: boot into safe mode and then go to Start/Run/CMD and type in: msiexec.exe
Once done and while still there type in: msiexec /regserver
Check the image path again, if it is now present, reboot.

If it ain't broke, leave it alone.
