Hello kelthompson and welcome to VirtualDr
That`s a corrupt registry message and you need to use the Recovery Console to fix it. Unfortunately you need the XP installation CD to access the Recovery Console.
Can you borrow an XP installation CD? We could give it a shot then and hope it will work.
Be sure to borrow the correct version of XP i.e. Home/Pro as you need the same version as yours.
Elaine
If it ain't broke, leave it alone.

Hi guys,
I'm not trying to sabotage kelthompson's post or anything, but i'm having similar problem here and rather than starting new thread, i thought i could post it here.
I also have missing windows/system32/config/systems on my laptop. All I have is the recovery disk that comes with the laptop and it's not bootable. I've tried to repair it using my friend's XP cd and it won't let me to access the recovery console. When I selected this option, all i got is blue screen. So I thought I could boot up using floppy disk and with my recovery disk in the cd rom. But I don't know how to repair it from there, what files to copy etc.
So any advice???????
Thanks in advance

This article tells you what you need to do, but there is no guarantee that it will work with a Recovery Disk. Some discs are basically copies of a normal Windows CD and should be fine, but they're not all like that by any means.
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents WinXP from starting

I couldn't use the procedures described since
Warning Do not use the procedure that is described in this article if your computer has an OEM-installed operating system
So after I boot using my floppy, what do i do next to copy the missing files????

You can either take the chance and try that procedure anyway (it isn't going to make things worse than they are now). Or otherwise you'll have to use your recovery discs to reinstall Windows from scratch. Sorry, but there are no easy fixes to this problem.
Nick.

formatting a laptop
I got this fujitsu laptop with XP pro. It's got the XP missing file problem. The problem is I don't have the fujitsu recovery cd. So i'm planning to reformat it using the XP pro cd that I bought myself. Can I do that without causing any problem????
thanks

Yes, you can do that. You should be able to get whatever drivers XP doesn't install from Fujitsu's website.

Some manufacturers hide the windows install files on the HD, either in a directory on C: (IBM) or as a separate partition (Dell), you might try there. You'll probably have to access them by looking for options on boot or in BIOS. This way you can save your $/windows for a different PC!

so how do i access these files?
I have one more problem, when I tried to do clean install using the XP cd I have error that generally says "Windows has detected problems and is shutting down to prevent further damage, restart, if you still see this error please remove the hardware/software.....". Then I tried to format the HD from DOS using " format C:" (while on C drive) but it doesn't recognize the command. I tried also to boot into safe mode but it keeps looping back (it also appies to all options available when F8 is pressed) into the fujitsu screen (my laptop is Fujitsu).
Please help.

I have some problem, I've also posted this in the laptop/pda forum but I guess it's more appropriate here.
When I tried to do clean install (also recovery) using the XP cd I have error that generally says "Windows has detected problems and is shutting down to prevent further damage, restart, if you still see this error please remove the hardware/software....." (Blue screen type of error). Then I tried to format the HD from DOS using " format C:" (while on C drive) but it doesn't recognize the command. I tried also to boot into safe mode but it keeps looping back (it also appies to all options available when F8 is pressed) into the main screen.
I'm pretty sure that the hardwares are compatible with XP. I installed a software just before it crashed, therefore I thought that could be the cause. Is there some way to remove this software from dos or something or any other suggestion?
Please help
thanks

Check your xp cd that it isn't scratched or has dirt/fingerprints on it. If the disk is dirty xp will generate errors because it can't read the disk.
And you cannot format C when in C/windows because the drive is being used to get to DOS emulator. XP doesn't have DOS per se, and the only way to format an NTFS system is to remove that file system first. This isn't like the old win98 fdisk, format days.

I've merged the threads to avoid confusion, please only post a problem in one place or we can't see what's been suggested and tried.
Are you now using the Recovery CD or a normal Windows XP CD?
Nick.

The cd is fine, it's crystal clean
remove that file system first
How do I do that?

I used the normal windows XP CD when I got the blue screen ( stop error). I'm about to try it with the fujitsu recovery cd which I've just found last night. But i'm thinking I will still get the same error.
I've also tried C:\ chkdsk while on the dos and once again, it doesn't recognize the command. I'm about to do "chksdk /r".
Advice????
Thanks
